G. W. Gazette
November 2019 Edition
'Tis the Season to be Thankful
I am truly grateful everyday to be part of the GW family. The more I get to know our students and staff, the more grateful I am. We have wonderful people that do amazing things everyday to better the lives of children. We help them learn not only essential standards in core subjects but how to be better friends, how to treat others with respect, and that it is OK to make mistakes because that is when real learning occurs. Alfred North Whitehead stated, "No one who achieves success does so without the help of others. The wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude." So, THANK YOU, to everyone who helps our students achieve everyday! I truly wish you all happiness and to be grateful this November.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Heather Davis
Reminder when picking up students from school...
Cold Weather Guidelines
Keokuk Community School District believes in the importance of fresh air and the negative health consequences of children spending too much time in closed, indoor settings. We feel it is in the best interest of our students to allow them to play outside whenever appropriate. Students will go outside in cold weather unless the real feel, or windchill temperature is 10 degrees or lower. Students will go outside in hot weather unless the real feel, or temperature with humidity, is 100 degrees or higher. Teachers may use their discretion when it comes to other weather factors such as wind gusts, condition of grounds, heat index, etc. If you feel your child needs to stay in from recess the day after an illness, a note from the parent/guardian is required. A doctor’s note may be required to stay inside for additional days.
Please make sure your students have a warm coat, hat, and gloves for the winter. If you need assistance getting these items, please contact the school as we have many donors that will help families in need.
Principal's Spotlight Book of November
From Mr. Coovert...
As teachers and parents, we know that all children behave differently when an adult is around so they often see mean behavior first. It is important that students are comfortable and know what to do when they see mean behavior happen. I will continue teaching students to identify what bullying is and is not. Students will learn that bullying only occurs when mean behavior happens frequently over a period of time. Bullying is never a one-time incident. A one-time incident is someone being mean. Using the correct term is important. Students will learn how to be defenders by learning, practicing, and using four different strategies to intervene when they see mean things happening to others at school. The strategies include using humor to take the attention away from the mean behavior, telling an adult, reaching out and inviting the student who was the victim to play with them, and how to teach empathy to the student who was being mean. We want all students to believe in themselves so that they can take action safely when they see mean behavior happen at George Washington.
