Mr. D's SE Skills Guidance Updates
I hope everyone had a great week! This past Monday I had the opportunity to work with students in grades 2 through 5 at Gates Mills! Here is what the kids worked on. . .
Grades 2, 3 and 4: We took some time to review from last week’s lesson on Kindness and Bullying. We spent the rest of the lesson talking about our Gates Mills Anti-Bullying Pledge that we will be officially implementing on October 29th. The kids took time to create posters and signs that will be hung up in the hallways to continue to promote this new pledge. It also gave the students the opportunity to creatively express what the pledge means to them!
Grade 5: The fifth grade continued its work as our Gates Mills Anti-Bullying Committee! They are continuing their work on creating our all school assembly, as well as other components that will complement our new Gates Mills Anti-Bullying Pledge. More information on this will be coming out soon. Stay Tuned!!!
If you ever have questions about one of my lessons, please feel free to email me at cdimarino@mayfieldschools.org or call me at 440-995-7427.

Inside the Idea Lab with Mrs. Stephens
On Monday Kindergarten and First Grade had extra Idea Lab time. We folded up our new tables and pushed them out of the way so we had lots of room to use our big blue blocks, floor puzzles, magna-tiles, and legos. We also experimented on our music wall with different sounds. Some of our activities were done in large groups and some were done in partners (groups of two), and all of the students did a remarkable job of cooperating, working together, and taking turns. After clean-up, we read the story Pink Is For Boys and talked about how all colors are for everyone.
On Thursday during Idea Lab, all classes learned about the fantasy genre and were shown examples of fantasy books and series we have in our library. We started reading the 5 picture books that are nominated for the 2018 Buckeye Children’s Book Award, an award for notable books written by Ohio authors. Over the next few weeks we will finish reading all of them and each student will vote. Mrs. Stephens will tally the votes and submit them to the Buckeye Book Award website. Students and parents may also vote at home by visiting bcbookaward.info.
Please remember to send your child’s library books back each week, as we don’t want them to miss out on reading the many wonderful books we have in our library. Many have one or more books overdue and cannot check out any more until they are returned.
Halloween
Halloween is rapidly approaching. Our plans for Wednesday, October 31st, are:
Grades K-5 will have a regular instructional day until 1:30pm when all students will be able to dress in costumes and prepare for the Halloween Parade in the gym.
Dressing in costume is voluntary. Students in grades K-5 wishing to dress in costume must do the following:
Bring costume to school in a bag.
Have costumes which will fit over school clothes.
Require no parent assistance to dress.
Get dressed in a reasonably short amount of time in the classroom.
Face masks are permitted but for safety reasons you may not want your child to wear one.
NO TOY WEAPONS of any kind will be permitted including knives, pitchforks, swords, guns, etc.
Our Parade of Costumes will begin promptly at 1:45pm in the gym starting with grade K and followed by each of the other grade levels. Room parties will begin at approximately 2pm. The PTC will again be providing snacks for the Halloween classroom parties. If you are unsure of the ingredients of this snack for your child, please provide a special snack for your child that day. DUE TO DISTRICT POLICY, NO EXTRA FOOD OR CANDY IS PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM. If you wish to put together goodie bags, you must not include candy in the bags. Other suggestions are stickers, pencils, erasers, etc. Any extra food or candy will be returned home.
Photographs at School Events
While it is permissible to take photographs of your own children at school events, it is not acceptable to photograph other children without parent/guardian consent. We ask that all parents/guardians refrain from taking pictures at school events which may include other children.
Should the school event be one where it may be difficult not to include other students, such as a concert, play or athletic event, we ask that no pictures be emailed, texted, posted to social media and/or online networking media, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, Skype, blogs, Instagram, without the expressed written consent of all students' parents/guardians in the photograph.
