Celebrate Collaborative Posters
The video below shows how one teacher uses questions to engage all learners. She begins by using lower level questions and asks students about background knowledge, observations and experiences with a topic. She continues to raise the level of questioning as students are asked to make comparisons and find similarities and differences between each other's responses. Did you know? Not only is ensuring every student is participating in some way effective, but class discussion has a high return rate on student learning. According to John Hattie, class discussion has a .82 effect size, more than double the .4 effect size of one year of growth within one year of time. Boom!
Consider the following as you enjoy the video:
How have you used a strategy similar to this?
What are some of the ways this activity includes every student to have input?
What kind of higher order questions does the teacher ask to when posters are compared? What are some of the ways you can use this activity in your lesson?

PARENTS & FAMILIES:
- Back To School Night: BTSN is Aug 16 6:00-7:30pm. This is an exciting evening where you have the opportunity to meet all of your student's teachers and rotate through their schedule. Due to how the evening and rotations are scheduled, we encourage you to be timely, to avoid missing out on one of your child's classes. Please also make time for parking. There is limited parking in the parking lot - there is room for only 2 rows of parallel parking. Street parking is available for overflow. We also have 2 meetings following Back to School Night: 1) Science Camp is for all 6th grade families and is located in the cafeteria 7:30-8:00, and 2) Washington D.C. for 7th grade families interested in more information on next years travel.
- Enrichment: Students should have brought their enrichment forms home Aug 10. Please help your student select their course preferences by reviewing the options with them and also sign the form. Forms are due Aug 13. Students who get their forms in on time will get one of their top 3 choices.
- Teacher Professional Development Day: Aug 22 is a teacher professional development day. There will be no school on this day for students. Please plan accordingly. If your child attends MAP, there will be no MAP on this day.
- Picture Day: Students will be getting their pictures taken Aug 29. Please make sure students are still in dress code.
- Weekly Grade Checks: Weekly grade checks will begin Mon Aug 20. Please ask your student to see them every Monday!
- Career Day: NP3 will be hosting our annual Career Day for 7th grade students on Tues Oct 23. Parent volunteers will make short presentations to students on their own professions, while educating our 7th graders on the daily tasks they preform. If you would like to present, please fill out the Career Day form linked in this email and return the form to Mr. Brinkmann by Fri Sep 14. Any questions can be directed to Mr. Brinkmann at jbrinkmann@natomasunified.org or 916-567-5751. If families would like to volunteer without presenting, NP3 welcomes your help! Lunch donations, lunch set-up and lunch clean-up for our presenters are needed as well. https://natomasunified.org/content/uploads/sites/16/2018/08/Career_Day_Letter_to_Parents-2018.pdf
Transportation: NP3 is continuing their late bus option 3 days per week: Tue, Wed and Thur. The late bus departs at 4:15pm.
Communication: We are very grateful for feedback we receive from our families. It helps us reflect on our practices and make better informed decisions. We have learned from recent information gathering from all of our families that our weekly emails are greatly valued and we will thus continue this practice. Weekly emails will be from your child's Advisor and will include information on: class focus, upcoming assessments and school announcements. We will not continue detailed information on teacher websites due to lack of use.
SBAC Scores: If your student attended NP3 last school year we have their SBAC scores! Scores will be passed out at Q1 conferences the week of Sept 24. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Edwards at tedwards@natomasunified.org.
