Captain's Log

It has been a great first week. Remember that consistency, connection and passion are key. The kids need your consistent routines and to know you care about them and that they have connections to you and their classmates. Your passion for what you are teaching will be contagious. It just may take some of them longer to catch on. Our leadership team is here to support you in any way we can.

Please make sure you have dropped your class schedule in the Alta Vista school folder labeled "Class Schedules."

Conscious Discipline & CHAMPS

Our focus for the month of August is SAFETY. Make sure that you have a Safe Place ready for the first day of school.

Morning Meeting Lessons for August:

All things related to behavior, including CHAMPS templates and our behavior management plan can be found in the "Behavior" folder on the Alta Vista School House in Google Drive.

Tribal News

This year, each tribe will be selecting 2 months to sponsor a staff treat. This could be a staff potluck, a special snack, or something else entirely. Tribes can sign up for any month except December. Have one representative from your tribe email Mrs. Helton your picks (add a 3rd and 4th choice if the other months were taken). First come first served.


We will start PLCs this week! Before the PLC, please discuss with your team what you would like to focus on for your SLO (student learning objective). Also, we will be discussing your TTESS professional goals.

HINT: Align your professional goals with your SLO so that you are making the most of your time. For example, if you want your SLO to focus on a math goal, then a TTESS professional goal might be to develop your math fluency number talks.

NWEA MAP Testing

NWEA Map testing will start on Monday, September 9 for grades K-5 and must be completed by Friday, September 20. Ms. Boggess will be coordinating technology usage for these tests.

Before testing starts, you need to watch the short video below and then view the 2 learning modules discussed in the video.

Digital Icebreakers That Shatter: Activities to Break the Ice for great ice breaker activities you can do with your class. They give suggestions for low-tech activities as well as show you how to blend technology in to build students' digital competencies.

Campus Decision Making Council

We are looking for representatives for our Campus Decision Making Committee meetings that meet 4 times a year with the community and families. We will be paying extra duty for your participation. We need representatives in the following areas (email Mrs. Helton if you are interested):

  • 1 Specials teacher
  • 1 Special education teacher
  • 1 Bilingual teacher
  • 2 Primary teachers (PK-2)
  • 2 Upper teachers (3-5)
  • 1 Aide
  • 1 Aide for Childcare

The meetings will be on the following dates at 5:30 pm in the library:

  • October 10
  • December 12
  • March 3
  • May 7

Safe Schools Training DUE SEPTEMBER 2


In an effort to provide the most effective and meaningful compliance training for all district employees, the Waco ISD Human Resources Department and Office of Professional Development have continued to team with SafeSCHOOLS to provide an online training platform. Starting May 24th, 2019 all district employees will be able to access and complete the following required trainings for the 2018-2019 school year: 1) Bloodborne Pathogen and Exposure Prevention, 2) Bullying: Recognition and Response, 3) Child Abuse: Mandatory Reporting, 4) Copyright Infringement, 5) Homeless Students: Awareness and Understanding, 6) Sexual Harassment: Students Issues and Response, 7) Youth Suicide: Awareness and Prevention, and 8) Human Resources Policies and Procedures. The deadline for completion of these courses is September 2nd, 2019. Those that have not completed the trainings by that date will be required to attend face-to-face trainings to fulfill the requirements.

Courses in safeSCHOOLS are delivered by chapters and can be completed at your individual pace throughout the course of the summer. Courses have quizzes at the end that do require you to achieve a passing score for completion.

  4. Required courses will appear on your home screen

  5. All course completions will be tracked by WISD Human Resources and the Office of Professional Development.
