Student Leader of the Week
SLOWdowns are featured each Wednesdays on Facebook and Instagram as way of recognizing some of the awesome students who make up the Camp Min and Seattle U community. Know someone who you think should be featured on a SLOWdown? Email your nomination to campusministry@seattleu.edu.
This week’s Student Leader of the Week is Jonathan Choe! Jonathan is involved in many different activities on campus that allow for him to cultivate community. “I really enjoy music, so I am involved in the University Choir on campus, and I also sing in Chapel Choir every week… I like to find places where I can find community, so Chapel Choir and University Choir are both places where that can be found. I also play Rugby, Rugby is another great place to find community.” Jonathan has appreciated being a part of the Seattle U religious community as it has allowed for him to gain a new understanding of Catholicism. “When I got to SU, I saw how people really put faith in action… put faith in justice… put faith in acceptance, love, and community.” He appreciates the diversity within the Church which has helped shape his values in his personal life, he says; “One parish might have people of a wide range of different cultural backgrounds, a wide range of different social classes… they all are united by the Church … the way that informs how I live is I try to be blind to what society might consider a divide…I treat all people the same, while acknowledging that people have different experiences.”
Reflecting with Sunday's Scriptures
Each week during the academic year, students and staff write reflections on the week's Scripture readings to be included in the programs distributed at our 11am and 8pm masses at the Chapel of St. Ignatius. We'll be including them here in this newsletter. If you are interested in writing one, contact JoAnn Lopez, Campus Minister for Liturgy.
March 17, 2019: Second Sunday of Lent (Readings)
Reflections by Clare Rodgers
In this week’s readings I see a common theme of patience and trust woven throughout. God is telling us that although it might be hard at times, we must be patient. In all aspects of our lives, God is with us. We are challenged to stand firm in this knowledge and trust that He always has our best interest at heart. For me, this trust and patience has not come easy. I have struggled to let go of my frustrations, anxieties, and fears, and put all of my trust and faith in God. I am a person who likes to be in control, to know what’s going to happen next, to always feel prepared, but God has challenged me, just as He challenges all of us, to put these desires aside and find peace in our relationship with Him.
For me, I have turned to prayer to nourish my relationship with God. Weirdly enough, prayer has also been something that I have struggled with, but over the last year, I have found a deep sense of groundedness in my prayer practice. It has helped me feel closer to God, which in turn, has strengthened my patience and trust in Him. I have come to know that while there may be times where I am disappointed, angry, or confused, I am never alone in them. God is, and always will be, there to pick me up when I am disappointed, to calm me down when I am angry, and to give me clarity when I am confused. For whatever emotion I am feeling or whatever situation I am in, God is the constant. His love and care for all of us is unending. As we head into finals week, I think that this is an especially good time to remember this. While it may seem close to impossible, as we prepare and study for these exams, we are challenged to be patient with ourselves and put our trust in God that we will do the best that we can and that everything will end up being okay. Finals will end, but God’s love for us will not. What are ways that you can build your relationship with God? How can you put more trust and patience in Him? How can that trust and patience transcend into other aspects of your life? Is there a new prayer practice you would like to try this Lent?
