Scariest Day Ever!
Dear Parents and Guardians!
Just a reminder that on Halloween Monday, we are celebrating an orange and black spirit day. No costumes please. Halloween ears, hats, etc. are ok. Also, please refrain from sending in sweet treats. We already are aware of the excitement as we felt it in the school today! Learning and focused instruction needs to take place on Monday for all little John B. Dey goblins. Thank you for your help!

2nd Annual JBD Treats for the Troops Candy Drive
Dear John B. Dey students and parents,
My name is Lauren Fenty. I am a fifth grader, in Mrs. Cohen's class. For those of you who were here last year, you may remember that my dad died in Afghanistan, when I was 28 days old; and I wanted to support those military men and women who continue to serve our country.
Last year, John B. Dey students donated 777 pounds of candy to send to our deployed troops. Some more candy was shared with the 11th Transportation Battalion, who support our school. It was great to thank them for all they do for us here, at John B Dey. Let’s do it again!
KoolSmiles helped us, through their Treats for Troops program. We collected candy and they mailed it to deployed troops through Operation Gratitude. They also gave Operation Smile a check for $500 on behalf of John B. Dey. This year, they will donate $750!
Operation Smile helps children with cleft palates by giving them surgery for free. Last year, our drive paid for 2 surgeries and supplies. KoolSmiles’ new pledge will pay for 3 surgeries! They agreed to share in the good will by having us invite others to support Operation Smile. If you know a family or business who can donate to Operation Smile through this drive, please ask them to help.
SO, HERE’S THE PLAN:
Let’s all share our Halloween candy with deployed military service members. They are away from their families, and many will enjoy a taste of home. Also, if they share the candy with the local people, it may help them build relationships; which can make their jobs easier, because they are building trust.
Why should you share your candy?
1. Because you can.
2. Because it would be thoughtful.
3. Because you don't need to eat too much sugar.
4. Because when you share, money will be donated to help provide surgery to kids with cleft palates, giving them healthy smiles.
Who is helping us?
The Virginia Beach, Holland Road KoolSmiles Dental Office, through their Corporate Program: Operation Troop Treats and Operation Gratitude; and any other family or businesses who can.
What will happen to the candy?
Mrs. Cohen’s class will collect candy at the door all next week and it, along with toothbrushes, will be shipped to troops.
It will be weighed and matched with dollar donations to Operation Smile.
What if a family or business wants to donate to Operation Smile through our drive?
Anyone can send in a check made out to Operation Smile. Ask them to put ‘John B. Dey Candy Drive’ in the memo line. Mrs. Cohen’s class will collect checks and make sure to thank those who donate.
What do you get for participating?
1. You can feel great about yourself.
2. You can know that you are helping to bring healthy smiles to kids with cleft palates.
3. ... And, this is big: All the candy we collect will be shipped to deployed service members. We will be sending a message of gratitude to some real heroes.
So, have fun on Halloween. Enjoy some of your treats. Be grateful for your health and safety. Consider sharing with others who protect us and those less fortunate than us.
Happy Halloween!!!
Lauren Olivia Fenty
