Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 1/16 - 1/20/17
Halfway Through January!
Fundations:
We continued our suffix work with -y, -ly, and -ty this week. We assessed Unit 7, after three long weeks in this Unit. We're really picking up great phonics skills and remembering short and long sounds when asked. Very impressive!
Literacy:
This week we started our Poetry Unit! The 2nd graders are really excited. We are looking at the structure of poetry. We've learned about stanzas, white space, the different punctuation at the end of lines of poetry and that capitals and lowercase letters are okay however you want in poetry! We've discussed a poet's inspiration for writing a poem and how poems can mean many different things to different readers. It's so fun!
Math:
With the end of Second Quarter approaching this week, we took our Math Fact Fluency Assessments. Part One assesses addition and subtraction facts within 20. Part Two covers addition and subtraction facts within 100. There was an "Extending Section" for those students who showed proficiency in those areas. The Extended Section covered multiplication, division, and addition/subtraction in the 100's. Just a reminder: these quarterly fluency assessments are based on learning goals for the END OF SECOND GRADE. Most of us are still in the learning process of these expectations.
Also, we have been working really hard on solving missing addend problems. This can be quite tricky, but we are using lots of fun strategies to solve these types of problems.
Writing Workshop:
It's really nice how our writing is tying in with our Reading this week! We are also writing Poetry as well as reading and thinking about poems! We began some of our first poetry pieces this week! We are visualizing poetry through some mentor texts. We even had a "walk" around the room and picked out some objects to write about. We learned that not all poems have to rhyme, but they can rhyme. Here is a sample of our class poem about scissors:
Scissors
I think I hear a cricket...
t -t-t-t-t
Snipping through the paper.
t-t-t-t-t
Zig-zagging across the open space
t-t-t-t-t
until my paper is cut.
T-T-T-T-T
We ended the week with a celebration of our Information Books. We made covers, wrote about ourselves as authors, some had glossaries, and then we shared them with our classmates in Ms. Valentour's room. Our room was buzzing with knowledge and excitement!
Junior Achievement:
We had our fifth and final lesson this week with Mr. Tony. We learned about how money moves through a community and helps EVERYONE! We sang a fun "rap" song about money too!
Meet Ty Peboontom...our STAR of the Week!
A "happy dance" to start the dreary day! It turned our moods around! :-)
Working together on our writing is always fun!
Playing the Money "Match Game" during Junior Achievement.
Testing our "coin knowledge" should be easy...our Super Hero Behavior Program is based on money!
Good partners...good friends!
