MSE is proud to announce that December's Teacher of the Month is music teacher Ms. Sherry Freeman! After spending 33 years in the classroom, there is no doubt that she is an expert educator. Ms. Freeman attended Meredith College in Raleigh, NC for her undergraduate degree in Music Education and received her Master's from Kent State in Ohio. She's passionate about multiple types of art, including home decorating. Her favorite hobby is "changing the look of her home by either homemade crafts or changing the paint color in a room." However, her love for both music and teaching began early on. Says Ms. Freeman, "I decided to teach because of my music experiences in both middle and high school. I loved it!"
Ms. Freeman has already succeeded in passing on that love of music to her own family. She's been married for 34 years, and while her son became a chiropractor, her daughter has followed in her footsteps by becoming a high school music teacher (which was Ms. Freeman's previous job of 20 years). Ms. Freeman hopes to pass on that same appreciation of music to all her students, too. She says, "What I love about teaching is when students tell me that they love coming to music class."
As the only music teacher for kindergarten through 8th grade, Ms. Freeman is a well-known presence around MSE by both teachers and students. Teaching music to all grade levels is no easy task, but you would never guess that to look at Ms. Freeman. Says Ms. Montenegro, "Ms. Freeman always has a smile and a positive attitude. She arrives at school bright and early every morning ready to give her all to her students. My classroom is right next door to hers and it always sounds and looks like her students are having the best time, whether they're singing or using instruments."
Ms. Stout echoes a similar sentiment about the positive effect Ms. Freeman's presence has on the school, saying: "Ms. Freeman has an amazing attitude. I admire her ability to work with all grade levels with so much enthusiasm. She is a huge asset to our school!" Ms. Freeman's attitude is rooted in her true enjoyment to come to work each day. She's been at MSE for 3 years, and she claims, "MSE is a wonderful place to work because of the faculty and staff. I haven't worked at a school that I enjoyed more than MSE. There are no 'cliques' or groups of teachers that stay to themselves. It's a family here."
Congratulations on being named December's Teacher of the Month, Ms. Freeman! You are a shining example of what makes an excellent teacher, and our MSE family is lucky to have you.
