Second Grade Scoop
Miss Roberts * Stoy School * October 1, 2018
Thank You!
Thank you for attending our Back-To-School Night last week. The boys and girls were excited to share their classroom with you and I hope you enjoyed getting a peek into their lives in 2R. They are proud of their classroom and enter each day with smiles upon their faces.
Second Grade is a wonderful place to learn and grow. Every child learns differently and reacts to new learning and social situations in their own way. There are students who welcome a challenge and “jump in” right away, while others may try strategies one by one to find a good fit for themselves. But, there is always some children who are unsure where to start or even nervous about a new concept, idea, or interaction with another school mate. No matter your child’s personality, please know that Mrs. Lynch and I support them with encouragement and kindness every day. Our goal is to provide them with options or strategies that will best support their learning and growth as a person.
I hope that your child excitedly shares their experiences and new understandings with you each day and that you see it through your child’s Seesaw Journal. Please know I am here for you and your child. If you need anything I’m a phone call away.

Reading Workshop
Journeys is our comprehensive language arts and literacy curriculum which encompasses reading strategies, phonics, vocabulary, grammar, spelling and high frequency words. It works in collaboration with the Daily 5 and The CAFÉ reading strategies. Each week, we will focus on a theme and read realistic fiction and informational, nonfiction texts. I will inform you of the specific skills and strategies.
This week we will explore the theme “Neighborhood Visit.” Through our reading, we will visit neighborhoods both imaginary and real, filled with friends to meet! As we read, we will explore the Big Idea “There are different kinds of communities." We will begin the week by reading about Henry’s move into a new neighborhood. As we follow his search for a pet in the realist fiction selection Henry and Mudge, we will think and talk about the question ”Why is the order of events in a story important?" We will also read an informational text called All in the Family.
Target Vocabulary: curly, straight, floppy, drooled, weighed, stood, collars, row
Phonics Skills: Words with short "A" (can); words with short "i" (dig) and CVC words
(consonant, vowel, consonant) such as “win”
Vocabulary Strategy - Alphabetical order
Comprehension Skill: Sequence of events – tell the order in which things happen
Comprehension Strategy: Infer/Predict - uses clues to figure out more about the story parts
Writing Workshop
The students will be reintroduced to the formation of "Magic C" lowercase letters. They will focus on a, d. The will focus on the understanding that their pencil does not have be picked up while writing each letter. After practicing each letter they will asked to notice that an a is a short letter a d is a tall letter.
During Writing Workshop, the students will continue writing personal narratives. They are learning about describing each part of their story instead of writing a list of events. They will focus on "zooming" in on a specific part of personal memory and writing it using their senses. As a class, we will talk about how our stories follow a chronological order and the idea of using sequence words to help our reader follow along. We will create an anchor chart of transition words for them to references while writing.
Reading Response
The Students will be bringing home their Weekly Reading Response Notebook on Monday. The expectation is that they will respond to a book they are reading at home. There will be a specific response that correlates to the reading strategy we are focusing on in class. For the first few weeks, I will be modeling the expectations to help the students understand how to complete a 2nd Grade response. Anchor charts and visuals aids will be included so that students can organize their ideas before writing. Your nightly conversation about the book your child is reading will help support them and develop their response. However, encourage them to write the response independently.
Global Read Aloud
During the project, our class will be reading a series by authors and illustrators Juliet Flett and Monique Gray Smith. We are excited to connect with other kids reading the same books, especially since more than 200,000 students are already participating in their classes. If you would like more information about the Global Read Aloud, visit the website www.theglobalreadaloud.com
Math
In the earliest lessons of this chapter, the students will review some of the addition and subtraction algorithms taught in first grade. They will practice the Make Ten and Doubles strategies when adding single digit numbers. It is important that the students' accuracy and fluency increase when adding and subtracting single digit numbers. After the review, the students will be taught how to apply those strategies to 3-digit numbers. Using base-ten blocks, they will practice and learn multiple regrouping
Lesson 1 - Addition and Subtraction Facts Within 20
- Use mental math to add and subtract with 20
- Know basic addition and subtraction facts to 20
- Use base-ten blocks to add numbers without regrouping
- Add up to three-digit numbers without regrouping
- Solve real-world addition problems
- Vocabulary * add * place-value chart
- Use base-ten blocks to add numbers with regrouping
- Add up to three-digit numbers with regrouping
- Solve real-world addition problems
- Vocabulary * regroup
Make Tens Stratey
0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5, 10 + 0, 9 + 1, 8 + 2, 7 + 3, 6 + 4,
Double Strategy
"I know 7 + 7 = 14, so 7 + 9 is the same as 7 + 7 + 2 = 16"
Regrouping
Science
The students will have an opportunity to share the seeds they created during our Maker Space project. After we collect and sort seeds we find in nature, the students will turn their focus to the importance of water, which is taken in by the roots. They will also learn what it is about dirt that plants really need. They’ll build a Root Viewer to see up close how roots behave.
