One Book, One Unami
Summer Reading 2013
What does "One Book, One Unami" mean?
This summer, the entire Unami community will share a common experience by joining together and reading, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. All incoming 7th, 8th, and 9th graders will read Wonder as one of the two required summer readings. For the second book, students may read a title of their own choice.
During the 2013-2014 school year, there will be school wide activities that connect with this extraordinary book! In fact, we think it is such a great book that we encourage our Unami parents and families to join us and read it as well!
What is Wonder about?
Wonder by R.J. Palacio, is centered on the character of Auggie Pullman. Auggie was born with an incredible number of birth defects including shocking facial deformities. Until now, Auggie has not been able to attend school. With his entrance into school come new challenges. You will see these challenges not only through Auggie's eyes; but through the perspective of some of his peers, his high school age sister, and two of her friends.

Ms. Bishof enjoyed Wonder because...
I was able to connect the most with Auggie's sister, Via. My younger brother also has a disability. Growing up, a lot of my life revolved around him, just as Via's life revolves around Auggie. Similar to Via, as I grew up, I had to learn to be an individual separate from my family.
Mrs. Kueny recommends Wonder because....
Everyone wants to feel like they fit in. Whether you are in middle school or an adult, Auggie shows us all how important it is to choose to be caring and kind. Auggie is not perfect, none of us are. He makes mistakes, so do his friends and family. But they learn from those mistakes-- and we can too.
Mrs. Caldwell explains....
I loved Wonder because we have all at one time or another felt like Auggie...being judged based on how we look instead of who we are on the inside. His bravery and loyalty is inspiring to everyone who reads this book. Wonder is truly a WONDERFUL book!
Mrs. Miller likes Wonder because...
Wonder is a book that reminds us that life can be challenging and even more for some. We all deserve to be treated the same no matter our differences and every day challenges.
Mrs. Keller's thoughts on Wonder....
I love this book....It captures the "good" and sometimes "bad" of middle school. I think that everyone who reads it can identify with the characters, and I can truly say that reading this book made me a better person!
Mrs. Herwig is excited because...
Wonder is a book that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. In fact, after I finished it, I didn't want to start a new book because I wanted to stay in Auggie's world for a bit longer. It's rare to find a book that will reach such a wide audience. I look forward to talking with everyone about this book in the fall.
