SSMS Weekly Update

JANUARY 28, 2021

Dear SSMS Families,

We've had another excellent week at Sycamore Springs Middle School. We're seeing a positive trend in attendance for both students and staff. During the first semester we hit an all time high for our annual attendance rate at 98.4%. This is an amazing accomplishment and we look forward to outstanding numbers for the spring semester now that we are getting past the peak of the Omicron variant. For students who have been out recently, please be sure to see the note below about making up assignments. Have an outstanding weekend!

Making Up Work from An Absence

Canvas is a powerful tool that provides students and teachers access to course assignments on a 24/7 basis. When students are not able to attend school, they still have access to their coursework if they have internet access. We also understand that some students have been sick and not feeling well. When students are really sick, keeping up with classwork from home may not be possible. Our make up work policy allows students one day per day absent to turn in work after returning from an absence. For example, if a student misses 8 days of school for a quarantine, when they return they have a total of 8 school days to submit the work that was assigned during that timeframe. The student is responsible for communicating with each teacher to determine which assignments need to be completed and submitted. Teachers are available each morning from 8:30 - 8:55 in tutorials to assist students. Of course, we recommend keeping up with assignments in real time if students are well enough to do so. The pacing of many of our classes is fast, so just a few days out will put a student behind, and catching up is much harder than staying caught up.
Congratulations to all of our students of the term

SSMS Staff Valentine Luncheon

Parents, Patrons, and Caregivers! We've survived Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the winter holidays, but we've entered the post New Year doldrums. Please help us show our SSMS teachers and staff some well-deserved appreciation! Let's fill their hearts and bellies by showcasing your favorite warm dishes and desserts.

Sign up here (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0D4AAFA622A1FF2-ssms) to bring in something in a Crockpot / Instant Pot or dessert on February 11th! Lots of smaller items too…

Please also consider a plant or flower arrangement that will be drawn for at the end of the day (the staff and students LOVE this - the lucky names will be called over the intercom!). Donations can be brought in during drop-off, or before 9:30am and hardware / leftovers can be picked up after 1:30pm. This will truly put a little pep in their steps, and we sure do love our SSMS!
