Curtis Chronicles

Nov 30, 2021

Hello from Curtis Principal, Sonya Pitcock

Cougar parents,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break with family and friends. We feel blessed to have such a supportive community partnership with you as we work to support the growth of our students. We will have three weeks until our winter break and the end of the semester! We encourage our students to keep working hard to finish this semester strong!

Our semester exam schedule is below. Students will not be able to take exams early and if exams are missed, they will need to be made up the week we return from break, starting January 4.

  • Tuesday - Dec 14 – PE/Athletics, ELA 7, History 7/8 and Algebra 8
  • Wednesday - Dec 15 – Fine arts, Math 7/8 and Algebra 8, Foreign Language
  • Thursday - Dec 16 – CTE, Science 7/8, ELA 8, Foreign Language
  • Friday - Dec 17 – makeups, corrections, part 2

Parents, please be sure to send a note with your child after an absence so we can excuse the absence. We are working on reducing our unexcused absences. You have three days from the absence to turn in the note. Students can drop those off in the office before school or you can enter the absence in skyward.

Student devices are being consistently monitored by a program called GoGuardian. We can see everything students search for and try to access from their district device no matter where they are located and in real time. Unfortunately, we are seeing a large amount of inappropriate searches from our students. We encourage parents to have discussions with your children and remind them of the acceptable use policies and expectations for device use. We are monitoring GoGuardian and having conversations with students who are using devices inappropriately. Also, please remind your children to lock their computer when/if they leave it unattended and be sure not to share their password with anyone. Lastly, the devices should be treated with respect and care. Students carrying their devices in their backpacks need to think about it being in the backpack before dropping or throwing backpacks down. We know accidents happen, but are just asking that you remind your students about taking care of the device.

Attn: Class of 2026 Students and Parents - A message from your Curtis Counselors

We hope that 8th grade is off to an excellent start.

We are quickly approaching that exciting time of year where we look forward to charting a course toward high school graduation. It's a time to take our dreams and make them into our plans! This will be a flexible plan with opportunities to adjust along the pathway to graduation in 2026. We want to share with you the process ahead. Together we will work to develop an individualized plan for your student.

  • Naviance lessons - students have already begun exploring their college and careers interests and their strengths and talents through various tasks in the Naviance system.

  • Endorsements/ Pathways /Classes - students have been learning/reviewing about the 5 Endorsements. Each endorsement has numerous clusters and pathways to connect students to classes that match their interests and strengths.

  • Four Year Plan - students will start to develop a Four Year Plan to help them see the “big picture” for the years ahead. Remember - this is a flexible plan that will be reviewed every year to ensure that they reach their goals. Ask them to pull up the document so you can discuss it together at home. In the spring, each student will input their finalized Four Year Plan into Naviance where it will be kept throughout high school. Their plan in Naviance will be reviewed and edited yearly with their counselors and/or college/career advisor.

  • Course Selection - Lowery Freshman Center (LFC) will share with students about classes available for 9th grade on January 11th, 2022. More details will be coming soon by email directly from Jill Stafford, LFC Principal.

We know there will be questions along the way and we are here to answer all of them. Here is a link to additional information and videos: Creating a 4 Year Plan

Thank you for your partnership as we empower each student with a flexible, individualized plan to ensure they reach their full potential.

Together we can do more!
