Mission: Collaborative Community that Transforms Learning
Vision: All students will grow in curiostiy, capability and confidence
Masks strongly encouraged for all
In Northside ISD the safety of our school family combined with the highest quality teaching and learning are our greatest priorities. As we continue to monitor increasing cases of COVID-19, we STRONGLY encourage all students, staff, and visitors to wear well-fitting face coverings in accordance with the recommendations of many groups of medical professionals.
In addition, if a staff member or student tests positive or needs to be quarantined because of exposure, they should continue to wear a mask for the 5 days following their return to campus in order to protect other students and staff around them. This is guidance from the CDC.
Wearing masks has long been considered best practice in the medical field, protecting both doctor and patient. In the same way, everyone wearing masks in our schools will protect both students and teachers.
The use of a well-fitting facemask, along with our current safety protocols, will help keep our schools open. We believe in-person learning is the best way for students to learn, play sports, create music and art, become problem solvers and leaders. By wearing a mask in school, we can better protect the health of our Northside family and reduce possible disruptions to learning.
In addition to the use of masks, our current protocols include:
- Routine cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms, common areas, and buses;
- Hosting of numerous vaccine locations and testing sites across the District;
- Weekly reporting of confirmed COVID cases on our website.
We are grateful for the opportunity to educate and support your child as we face this challenging situation together. Thank you for your support of Northside schools.

Student Early Release -Teacher Planning Time
Additional planning time is needed for teachers to meet the needs of student learning loss due to the pandemic. We believe the quality of instruction will improve with teachers having more time to prepare quality lessons, develop assessments, analyze student data and collaborate as a professional learning community.
Other Student Early Release-Teacher Planning Time Dates for the school year are February 16, March 23, April 20 and May 18.

COVID Rapid Testing Program
We are committed to doing all we can to keep staff and students healthy and safe. With this goal in mind, we are pleased to share that we will be taking part in a statewide program offering rapid tests for use in schools. This program will allow NISD to test symptomatic individuals and reduce the risk to our school community. This email offers further information on the tests and the testing program. If you have additional questions, you can contact Mrs. Alvarado, our school nurse, by email or phone at 210-397-4550.
What COVID-19 tests are used in this program?
This program uses GenBody Tests, which provide results in 15 minutes and are administered using a nasal swab in the front area of the nostril. If your child’s test results are negative, but they are symptomatic, a medical evaluation with an alternative diagnosis and/or negative PCR test is still necessary if you wish to have your child return to school prior to the 5-day isolation period.
Who will be tested?
With parent permission the test will be administered to an individual who is experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 and attending school for in person learning. A Parent Permission Form will be coming home with each student next week. A form is also linked below. You will need to print it out and return to the school nurse.
How will the information from the tests be used?
If a parent has given permission for Mrs. Alvarado, Trained Staff to administer the GenBody test for their child, your child’s school will call you to let you know that your student is experiencing symptoms and that they will be administering a GenBody test. The test administrator will also call to share the results after the test has been administered. The results will also be shared with the NISD and with the local health department to allow for public health reporting and contact tracing and to determine the stay-at-home period for individuals who test positive. Additionally, the total number of positive tests per school will also be shared with the Texas Department of State Health Services as is required by law.

Kids Heart Challenge Update
Families have already joined us on the KHC Road Trip and have taken the challenge to Be Active or Be Kind! Hop on board with these families if you didn't get started last week. So far, we have raised $701.50 donations toward our $5,000 goal and 1 student has completed Finn’s Mission!
PARENTS – HERE’S HOW TO GET STARTED
Step 1. Visit our school’s Kids Heart Challenge page: http://www2.heart.org/goto/Murnin_Elementary OR download the Kids Heart Challenge App for iPhone or Android to search for our school and sign up!
Step 2. Complete Finn’s Mission – this will be your road map!
Every student that completes Finn's Mission gets to COLOR BLAST the Coach!
Why do we support the American Heart Association? 2/3 of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur inside a family’s home. Funds raised can help train millions of people to respond in a cardiac emergency to save the life of a loved one. Go to Finn’s Mission to begin this training for your family! Share what you learn on your social media to complete another part of Finn’s Mission and encourage others to learn too!
Parents – you can join your student(s) on the road. We invite you to join us in at-home heart-healthy behaviors by accessing the KHC Experience.
Student Leadership News
Culture & Community Connectedness involves standing up for and showing concern for the rights and feelings of others.
Take time today to notice how your friends are feeling. Not everyone had the same experiences you did during the winter break. Make sure that in your excitement to share about your break, that you notice how your friends are feeling. You can make a difference by making sure everyone has a chance to share, and if a friend does not have something positive to share, start another conversation that will make them feel included too
