Safety Protocol Updates

Based on updated health guidance, Walnut's safety protocols remain similar but with a few adjustments:

  • Masks are still required indoors for students and adults
  • Regular hand washing & sanitizing continue
  • We are asking that students continue to wear a mask upon entry to verify that they have one ready to go for class. Once they enter campus, they may remove the mask while outside.
  • Students do not need to play in recess zones by grade level
  • We no longer have assigned seating for lunch

As mentioned in the CVUSD spotlight today, on February 28th state officials will make an announcement on the future of masking in schools, including the expected announcement of a date for when the indoor school mask requirement will be relaxed.

"Read Across America" Next Week!

Although we always love reading at Walnut, we are looking forward to celebrating Read Across America Day on March 2nd. In fact, we will have an extra emphasis on the joy of reading and writing all week long! The fun will kick off with assemblies on Monday featuring local author and Walnut parent, Jamie Hitt. She will share her book, The Things Friendship Brings, and talk about the writing and publishing process. On Wednesday, a few community helpers and college athletes will be on campus to read books to students in their classrooms. Unfortunately, we will not have a Family Reading Night this year but look forward to restarting that tradition next year. Look for a flyer going home soon with more details about the week's activities.

Walnut Elementary School

Walnut is a neighborhood school with a BIG heart, where every student is valued and encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child, so we invest in the visual and performing arts, technology, and physical fitness in addition to traditional academics. We were recently one of five schools in Ventura County named as a California Honor Roll School. We are committed to our mission statement, Academic Excellence for All in a Safe, Enriching Environment. Walnut has an active PTA, School Site Council, and English Language Advisory Council. Each of these groups of parents and community members would LOVE to have YOU join them in making sure Walnut provides the best possible learning environment for students and families.
