Starling: Once Upon A Time
The Importance of Story In Creative Development
Once Upon A Time
How have the stories you interacted with influenced your life? Your art? Your creative development? What about the stories you wanted to avoid or ignore? How have those influenced you? Humans learn through narrative and artists have always been able to use story as inspiration in their work. In this episode, we discuss the power of "once upon a time" and delve into why we need the dark scary stories as much as the happily ever afters. I also share a little of my own personal mythology before sharing suggested practices around story as inspirational.

Suggested Practices:
Let’s talk about suggested to connect to characters, stories and myths while discovering our own personal mythology.
- What was your favorite childhood story? Think back as far as you can…what story did you connect to? Retell it. Tell it to yourself or a friend that will listen and see what you think made it so important to you and how you can see your own life mirrored in it.
- Artists have interpreted these tales through time in so many different ways. From illustrations to puppets, through songs and theater. How could you interpret your favorite childhood? What medium or method would best capture your own understandings gleaned from this myth you have lived by?
- Ask other people about their stories and what it has done for them in their life. Withhold judgement, as each persona connects with things on a personal level and we don’t get to judge their relationships to narrative that feel transformative to them. Plus…them sharing their connections with you will expand your own knowings.
- Mythologize a moment from your life. Make it as realistic or magical as you wish…just make it yours. Depending on your age…use as much of your life as possible…look back over large periods and see transformations and the way it happened.
- Watch a scary movie, read a ghost story, go on a walk at night…do something to put yourself in relationship to your fears. Just because you avoid them does not mean they are not there. So…this is the perfect time of year to get comfortable with it.
- What stories of dark forces have influenced your relationship to these shadow energies? Are they religious texts or Stephen King novels…or even Freddie Kruger movies. Or…is it true crime. Or…do you have personal ways you have confronted darkness. What stories have you told yourself about this? DO you need a new myth for that aspect?
- Create a costume. Halloween is coming…and this year is the best year to go all out, cause no one will even need to know unless you want them to. Plus…if you create a spectacular costume of a character that is meaningful to you…you can and will use it again.
