From the desk of our Proud Principal

Dear Bunker Hill Families,

ISTEP+ Part 1 and IREAD testing has been completed. Our kids did an amazing job! They were focused and they worked hard during each session of testing. I am very proud of their hard work! I would also like to thank our parents and staff that helped make the testing so successful! Our Bunker Hill community is so amazing!

April 19 – April 28 will be ISTEP+ Part 2 testing. Part 2 is on the computer. I want to thank all of our staff and FTCSC district staff that have been working hard to prepare for ISTEP+ Part 2. Attendance is crucial. In addition, like any assessment time, early bed time and a good breakfast will help your child do better. Finally, focus on positive talk and celebration about the ISTEP+.

A big thank you to our awesome Bunker Hill PTO and everyone involved with our Spring Fling! I know that many people volunteered many hours to provide our community with such a terrific evening! What a wonderful night! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

In closing, remember to read, read, read and practice math facts, math facts math facts. As Spring time activities continue to increase, finding time to keep academics going at home can be challenging. As a father of three kids all in soccer, I understand this well. Find ways to play academic games during car rides. For example, practice math facts. If your child is able to read in the car, turn off the radio or movie and have them read to and from practice or dinner. Minutes matter! Research shows a strong correlation between reading daily and student academic performance. Research shows that students that read for 20 minutes a day score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. In comparison, students that read for 5 minutes or less a day score in the 50th percentile or lowers on standardized testing. One of the greatest impacts you can have on your child’s education, is to make sure they read for an average of 20 per day.

Have an AMAZING April! Follow us on Facebook (Bunker Hill Elementary School), Twitter (@BH_Bulldogs), and/or by the hashtag #BHBulldogs – GO BULLDOGS!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kent Pettet

Spring Break provides an excellent time to create memories with your family! Whether you are going away for the break or having a "staycation", plan some special moments for you and your children! These moments do not have to be costly...it is about the experience! Some ideas to consider:

*Go for a picnic in the park.

*Cook or bake together.

*Surprise your children or spouse with their favorite dessert

*Decorate your dining room or kitchen with twinkly white Christmas lights for dinner one night.

*See a movie at the dollar theater

*Grab your tennis racket and play a quick pick up game.

*Go for a hike and take pictures of your views, wildlife, and each other!

*Have a movie night at home with comfy blankets on the floor and popcorn!

Enjoy Spring Break!

Student of the Month

This year we've decided to update our Student of the Month Awards. We wanted to tie in our monthly core essentials curriculum with our student of the month program. We will be spotlighting one student per classroom that has displayed the core essentials trait. For March the trait we’ve discussed is Hope. Classrooms read a Dr. Seuss book that portrays the month’s trait and then teachers chose one student from their class that demonstrated that trait. Below is a list of the monthly traits along with a link to a reading of the Dr. Seuss book that correlates.

September: Initiative Horton Hatches The Egg

October: Individuality Happy Birthday to You

November: Service Thidwick The Kindhearted Moose

December: Compassion How the Grinch Stole Christmas

January: Self Control My Many Colored Days

February: Cooperation The Cat in the Hat

March: Hope The Lorax

April: Friendship Horton Hears a Who

May: Contentment Yertle The Turtle

Front Office Information

Bunker Hill now has a full time receptionist at the front office. Join us in welcoming Jenny Lewis in this new position. She is a Bunker Hill parent who is excited to meet you and your students. Please be patient as she learns the front office procedures. Mrs. Gilliland will continue to volunteer and substitute teach at Bunker Hill.

This is a great time to remind you of a few front office policies.

  • Morning student drop off must be done in the car rider line. Drop off opens at 8:35 am in the car rider line.
  • Students arriving after 8:50 am must be signed in at the front office.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm. Teachers need time to make arrangements.
  • Attendance- Please review the Franklin Township policies and procedures for absences on p. 2-3 in the student handbook. We appreciate your cooperation.
  • All visitors must have a photo ID to enter the building.

Car Rider Reminder

Car Rider Participants:

Safety is our main focus in our car rider line. Please remember to have your child exit/enter the driver's side of your vehicle during drop off/pick up. If you have to use the passenger's side, a staff member must accompany your child to the sidewalk. A student cannot exit the passenger side of a vehicle without staff assistance.

We appreciate your patience when dropping off and picking up your child. This ensures the safety of all our students and staff.

Please share this safety information with anyone that may pick up or drop off your student.

LOST and FOUND

Don't forget to check our LOST and FOUND for any lost items. It is located at the top of the stairs on the way to the cafeteria.

Newsletter

Each month we will send out a newsletter with important information, dates, and reminders. This newsletter will be sent electronically to the email we have on file for each student. If you requested a paper copy, the newsletter will come home with your student. The newsletter will also be available on our website http://www.ftcsc.k12.in.us/bunker-hill or our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bunker-Hill-Elementary-School/172442352820782

REMIND

Remind is another great way to stay connected to Bunker Hill. You just text the number 81010 and enter message @bhbulldogs and press send. We will send out messages/reminders and you will simply receive then as a text message. We have no access to cell phone numbers nor does anyone else in this group. You can not reply to the message as no one will receive them.

Friendly Reminders

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm.
  • If electronics (cell phones, ipods, gaming systems) are brought into school and removed from backpacks, they will be confiscated by the teacher. A parent/guardian will be asked to pick up the electronic at the front desk.
  • When having lunch with your student in the cafeteria please remember to only have your child sit with you at the family table. We like to keep the table open for other families. Please No Fast Food!
  • When visiting your child for lunch, please go directly to the cafeteria and exit the building when lunch is finished. We are no longer allowing parents to go to recess with the class. We appreciate your cooperation in helping limit our classroom distractions.

Clinic Reminders

  • Vision Screening referrals have been sent home. If your child received a referral please make an appointment with an eye doctor as soon as possible and return referral paperwork to Mrs. Knox.
  • The flu season is upon us. Please remind your child to practice good hand washing skills. Students also need to practice coughing and sneezing into their elbow.
  • The clinic is in need of clothing and underwear for boys. Sizes most needed are 5 and 6.
  • If your child is vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, or has a fever they must be free of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Please return any medical paperwork as soon as possible.
  • All medications must be brought in and picked up by a parent or guardian to school.
  • If your child has medication in the clinic, please make sure that it is picked up by the end of the school year.

Immunization Information

Parents of current 5th grade students:

Immunizations of meningitis and Tdap are needed for the start of 6th grade. Please call the doctor now to schedule an appointment prior to the start of school so that your student will have the shots that Indiana requires for middle school. When you have an appointment date and time, please let the elementary school nurse know so that it can be recorded. Requirements are grade level-based, and not dependent on age of students entering 6th grade. Call now for the best availability of appointments.

Library News

Students check out books each week from the library. Enjoy spending time asking them about their book or reading it with them.

Please help your student remember that books are due the day before their library day. This allows time for books to get checked in.

A Music Note

4th Graders

The 4th graders will begin another recorder unit on April 25th.

Just as before, each student will need a recorder and a book. They are available at the student bookstore for $5 each.

I look forward to starting this fun unit with your children.

Because of our successful walk-a-thon and spring fling this year, we have already purchased wiggle seats, behavioral software, Twiddles, Superflex Superdecks software, Theraputy, balance board, HearBuilder software kit, weighted lap pads and an inflatable pea pod. We have also approved $35,000 to spend on the upper playground.
