Principal's Note: The Magic of Toys

Message from Mrs. Blomberg & Mrs. Eckholm:


When preparing for our project based learning unit, we looked at the standards taught for the informational text units for reading and writing in 4th grade. The students learned and practiced reading skills such as determine text structure, and synthesizing multiple texts through researching an iconic toy of their choice. They practiced their writing skills of using text evidence, organizing ideas, informational essay structure and effectively using text features to create their Iconic Toy book. As a review of narrative writing, the students used the writing process to publish a picture book that highlighted a theme relating to their toy or buddy.


We incorporated other subject areas. We integrated our social studies unit on innovations by giving the students first hand experience in creating and developing an innovator's mindset. They learned the importance of perseverance and problem solving to be successful. We integrated math operations standards and measurement standards by having students submit a budget, planning and designing their toy. Throughout this process, students also developed their communication skills through interviews, teaching others, and presenting their completed project in a professional way.


Beyond just meeting the standards, this unit helped foster real-life problem solving, a creative mindset and pride in their work by creating something for someone else. The students were able to positively contribute to the Wilmette community by gifting their toy and picture book to a student in Romona’s early childhood program.

MaryAnne O’Keefe- Second Grade Bike Safety

DON'T MISS THESE EVENTS:


Second Grade Bike Safety: On Monday, May 13, all McKenzie second graders will participate in a 30 minute active bike safety presentation and obstacle course on the blacktop during one of their afternoon class periods. Students need to have a bike (no problem if they do not, they can walk the course), a helmet and a bike lock to secure the bikes. Thanks to our parent volunteers! Bike to Highcrest: Fourth Graders - grab your bikes and helmets and sign up for Bike to Highcrest on Monday, May 20. Meet on the blacktop to check in with your signed registration and waiver after dismissal. Teams of students and parent volunteers will leave around 3:25-3:30 to bike to Highcrest, meet with HMS admins and bike back to McKenzie by approximately 4:25-4:35 for parent pick up. We need PARENT VOLUNTEERS too! Register and sign up to volunteer here.


Race for Recess: Help fund recess equipment for our sister school Carman-Buckner! Presented by the Power Up to Play Committee, Race for Recess will be a run/walk for the entire family and McKenzie staff. All proceeds will go toward gym equipment for Carman Buckner Elementary School. The Race for Recess takes place on Thursday, May 16, from 3:15-5 pm. For more information and to sign up click here.

No Fall Frenzy this October with No Chairs: Do you want your kids to have Fall Frenzy? We need co-chairs! PTA events only happen with parent volunteers and Fall Frenzy will not occur this October without interested parents to chair it. Fall Frenzy is a McKenzie favorite…please consider volunteering to chair!


Staff Appreciation and Stock the Shelves: Let's honor our wonderful teachers and staff during Staff Appreciation Week by throwing a Mexican Fiesta-themed luncheon and stocking the shelves of the staff lounge. There are many ways to get involved. Please sign up here to contribute food or drink items or your time.

Fourth Grade Bike to Highcrest: Parents we need your help! We need parent volunteers to ride with a team of students to Highcrest for the Bike to Highcrest Monday, May 20. Students and parents will leave McKenzie at 3:25 and return at 4:25. Sign up here.

4th Grade Farewell: Attention 4th Grade Families! Pictures needed for 4th grade farewell slideshow! Wilmette Historical Museum & Wilmette Police Department host Open Houses on Sunday, May 5th from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.


Wilmette Historical Museum hosts Summer Scavenger Hunt June 17 - August 4th.


North Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) offers year-round recreation programming for disabled individuals.


Trevian Girls Softball Association is seeking a few more 9/10 year old girls (4th/5th graders) interested in playing spring/summer softball. Contact Kelsey Lee at Klee@trevians.org for more information.


Trevian Juniors is a softball program for girls ages 6-10. Go to the website for tryout information.


Oakton Community College hosts summer STEAM camps and classes for students ages 8-12. Registration is now open.


Northwestern’s Center for Talent Development offers Weekend Enrichment Programs for students age 3 through 8th grade.


Love to sing? Youth Choral Theatre of Chicago offers a free vocal training class with flyer. Vocal classes available for children ages 4-18.


The Center Fitness Club schedule and various park district classes for children are posted.


Wilmette Food Pantry is open every Tuesday 10:30-11:30 am at Trinity United Methodist Church.

2nd Posting: McKenzie's New Assistant Principal 2019-2020

We are excited to announce that Anthony Haduch will be the new assistant principal for Central and McKenzie elementary schools. Anthony is currently teaching 3rd grade at Central. Before coming to District 39, he taught 4th grade at the Estrella Vista STEM Academy in Avondale, Arizona. He received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Michigan University and his master’s degree in educational leadership from Arizona State University. Anthony currently holds educational endorsements in early childhood, special education, and English as a second language. By the end of the summer, he will also hold his gifted education certificate. Anthony has expressed his excitement to continue his work alongside of our wonderful Wilmette community, and we all welcome him to his new role!
