Smith Media Center Review

September/October 2012

Fall, fall, falling...

Whoo-ee, September and October just breezed through the library this school year!

While much of September was spent introducing students to the myriad of fantastic book selections the library has to offer, we switched gears in October (and now November, too) to focus on some more research-based activities.

Fall into the Library 2012

Banned Books Week / Sep. 30-Oct. 6

The Student Research Center by EBSCOhost is a GREAT place to start a research project or to browse for information about interesting topics. It includes magazine & newspaper articles from 100s of sources, primary source documents, biographies, and much more. The NC Department of Public Instruction subscribes to this fantastic database for all public schools in the state, so let's put those $$$ to good use!

6th grade Science students have been using the Student Research Center for their "Seeking Science Scoops" assignment. Ms. Sapkarov spent two days teaching them how to navigate the database, how to choose their keywords wisely by narrowing/broadening their search terms, how to save articles to their accounts, and how to scan for a good source and interesting science-related article.

7th grade Language Arts students learned to use the Student Research Center to find articles for their infographic research project.

Don't forget that you can use this database at home too! The password is a 7-letter compound word that Ms. Sapkarov has shared with you already... ask her if you don't know what it is!

Character Education

Book Clubs

Battle of the Books has begun! We meet every Wednesday at lunch in the library. We have five 6th grade teams, one 7th grade team, and one 8th grade team. Who will make it to the district competition?!

The ARC Book Club is still going strong. We have partnered with Flyleaf Books to provide students with Advanced Readers Copies of books (not yet published!). Students agree that in exchange for these free, pre-published books that they will write a review to be posted on the forthcoming Smith Library blog.
