Move 2 Stand
The Success Center is very excited to share that Genoa HS had the privilege of participating in the first ever Move 2 Stand Youth Summit hosted by North Point ESC on Wednesday, October 3rd in Sandusky.
Twenty lucky GHS students attended this incredibly moving experience. As Move 2 Stand is designed to help all students step outside of their comfort zone, those chosen were a diverse group of kids. These potential school leaders were given an opportunity to expand their horizons and learn how to impact their school culture in a positive way.
MOVE2STAND (M2S) is an interactive training program that challenges students to examine their attitudes toward labels and how we treat the people around us. This one-day youth summit created empathy and helped some young leaders understand how their leadership impacts school climate and communities.
Students who attended quickly realized that they were not in for a “fun day off of school.” The experience was heavy, raw, enlightening, tear filled and painful, but so beyond important. Students learned that there’s definitely a stigma around mental health and social differences that needs to be eliminated. They learned that people have a lot going on underneath their “masks” that most people would never expect or understand.
Move 2 Stand is a program that focuses on these issues, shedding light on invisible social constructs and how to break down barriers. It gave our students the skills to take on a leadership role in our community to help bring an end to petty titles and bring their peers together as a whole.
Senior, Amanda Szczecinski shared, “During this conference I cried with 200 strangers and felt so close to them. I watched people from all different “social cliques” interact and talk about their experiences in high school from different vantage points (whether it be of the “jock,” “average Joe,” or the “nerdy kid”), and bond over similarities that most people will never take the time to learn. Watching ~200 kids be so brave and vulnerable and talk about their own experiences with bullying and oppression by their peers was heartbreaking but beyond enlightening. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity I was given to attend today. This was so enlightening and I plan to take what I witnessed today back to school and take action to make everyone at GHS feel loved and important. Starting a conversation is all it takes to begin something bigger. Start a movement of love.”
Talk about a POWERFUL day!

Emerging Technology Students Introduction to CNC Work
The Emerging Technologies classes were introduced to two CNC machines by creating their own "sign". The students were given the assignment to create what they would envision as a sign for themselves or someone they knew. Some students opted for basic carving while others chose to do a cutout, use LED lights, V-carve and paint or stain their sign. Below you will see a few examples of the work the students did for this project.
A more in-depth look at the class can be seen by visiting the link below.
Quiz Bowl Update
This week, the Genoa Quiz Bowl team succeeded in beating Bowling Green High school during a scrimmage. Although the points did not count towards the players individual totals, nor did the win of the game count towards a overall win in their count, it did however show the team that they are capable of beating one of the best teams in the league. Besides the scrimmage, Genoa’s team won against Woodmore, and lost to both North Baltimore and Findlay, also having a bypass in games. Individually, the team scored well and positively altered their overall points scored to halves played ratio. Matthew Robinson scored 28 points, followed by Emma Lau with 12. Coming up not too far behind was Zack Buhrow with 8, and Cole Millhime with 6. Taking up the flank was Emma Gould with 4 and Darin Muir with 2. With a powerful start to the season underway, and with the taping of NBC 24’s Academic Challenge Saturday, October 6. Time will only tell if these Comet brainiacs will ascend to the stars or stay in orbit.

Weekly Fun FACTS with: Cole Waters
From the Desk of Mr. Ohlemacher
Dear Comet Family,
This week we endured a tragic loss.
Our loss of Andrew Bryston has left us grief stricken and in search of answers we may never find. While there are answers we don’t have, there are things we do know.
We know we have students who suffer with mental health problems. As a school we
embrace this fact and will continue to address issues which impact student mental health through programs already in place and new programs which will continue to be developed.
We know the number of students affected by mental health problems is likely larger than we as a community would like to admit. Studies state that approximately 20% (1 in 5) teenagers struggles with some form of a mental health problem. GHS current daily attendance is 374 students. Statistically speaking this means GHS alone may have as many as 75 students suffering from a mental health problem.
At GHS a confidential document exists where we report and share concerns for individual students. The list is relatively small and we know it should be larger. Why is this? For as much conversation as there has been for the need to eliminate the stigma which surrounds mental health the stigma continues to keep children from seeking the help they need. We must continue to create a climate where our kids understand that it’s Okay to not feel Okay. Only then can we fully support our children in the way they so desperately need.
I’m asking you please have a conversation with your children about their mental well being and follow up regularly to discuss how they’re handling life as a teenager. Using open ended questions may be useful in allowing your child to share their story. If your conversation reveals concerns we can help with please reach out to myself or Mrs. Maluchnik.
As always,
Go Comets
