This week our students will be learning about the character trait of Bravery!
WHAT DOES BRAVERY MEAN?
Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgment; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness, but instead the overcoming of fear.
“I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” -NELSON MANDELA
Volunteers
Volunteers are welcome at HSES! If you plan to volunteer, you must be approved using the guidelines below. Now is a great opportunity to come into the school and register! If you have any additional questions, please contact the front office.
- All new volunteer applicants must register and have an approved criminal record check prior to engaging in volunteer work.
- All continuing volunteers approved for the 2019-2020 school year MUST reactivate as a volunteer no later than 4:00 p.m. on October 31, 2019. Reactivating volunteers may go to any WCPSS work site where they can register through www.wcpss.net by selecting the Community tab, and then selecting Volunteer Registration. Current volunteers, who provide a valid email address, will receive an email 15 days and 30 days prior to the expiration of their volunteer status reminding them to reactivate.
- Guests: Visitors who are never left alone with students are considered guests. They do not need background checks. Typical examples would include speakers, presenters and community members/parents attending a school event.
- Volunteers: Visitors who may be alone with students at any point do require background checks. There are no "levels" of volunteer status. You are either a volunteer who may be alone with students or you aren't. Typical examples range from a community volunteer who reads with a child to an overnight chaperone, as well as field day workers, testing proctors, and volunteer coaches. The same background check is done for every type of volunteer.
