Upper EL News
Dear Upper Elementary parents,
Dear Upper Elementary parents,
Highlights from the week
Our first RESEARCH presentations happened this week. Our students did a great job sharing their learning about the brain with one another. We learned about topics such as, parts of the brain, Alzheimer’s disease, how music affects the brain, how junk food impacts the brain, ADHD, sleep and the brain, and more.
We finished reading our first read-aloud book, Fish in a Tree. Ask your student to explain the story and what they enjoyed about it.
Each grade level started a new science unit. 4th graders are studying energy; 5th graders studied gravity; 6th started chemistry lessons. In math students worked on rounding, estimation, and patterns. Reading and writing lessons focused on poetry.
Our next research project is about the Universe. Students chose topics, found resources, and came up with their “thick” questions. They will present a trifold (with original artwork and writing) at a fair-type presentation on October 21st.
Our 6th grade Student Council met to create their Social Contract and each student was given a job to help our school community.
Crawford State Park was a huge highlight for our week. We are grateful that the weather improved for our camp-out. The evening included s’mores and a Talent Show. On Friday we built mud sculptures, went out on stand-up-paddleboards, practiced archery and took a short hike.
Thank you to all parents who helped out with our adventures at Crawford State Park. We really appreciate your help!
We ended the week with the North Fork High School homecoming parade. Thanks to the Upper El. students who helped us create “Class of” posters to display at the parade.
Upcoming Events
Lost Lake field trip for 4th graders on September 22. This field trip is sponsored by the US Forest Service and will take place during the school day (normal arrival and departure times). We have sent home a permission slip that needs to be sent back on Monday.
Parent teacher conferences are on Monday, September 26. There is NO SCHOOL that day. Look for a sign up coming soon.
Volunteers are always welcome in our classrooms, at home, on committees, and on field trips. We couldn’t do all that we do without your help, so let us know if you have some extra time, talent, or treasure you are willing to donate or volunteer. Volunteer opportunities in the classroom include giving and grading spelling tests on Friday mornings (8:30 - 9:30am), organizational projects, photocopies, etc. Other opportunities include helping with our fundraisers throughout the year. A lot of the money we raise is used to support our many field trips in Upper El, so we appreciate any time and efforts parents and Upper El students can give. Parents also can serve on leadership and fundraising committees. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are available and interested in volunteering. (MAKE SURE YOU FILL OUT THE YELLOW VOLUNTEER APPLICATION REQUIRED BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT).
Have a great weekend! Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Email is the easiest way to communicate with us, and be sure to check out our school website for important information, dates, and our staff bios.
