Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 9th March 2018
This weather is snow joke
Non-Uniform day success
Thank you for supporting our non-uniform day and raising money for rough sleepers and the homeless. In total we raised £193.45. The children have asked us to send it to the Harrogate Homeless Project.
The Project run a homeless hostel, which houses 16 people and also provides an emergency refuge for rough sleepers in accordance with the No Second Night Out scheme. In addition, they offer food, shower facilities, activities and one-on-one meetings with support workers that are designed to help homeless or formerly homeless people get the help and advice that they need.
Our fabulous tale
Welcome Mrs Stewart
Packed Lunches
We are currently working hard with the catering company to ensure that school meals are as healthy and varied as possible. However, some of our children have packed lunches and it is important that these are as healthy as possible too. On occasions we have children with sweets or other confectionary, such as chocolate bars, in their packed lunches.
Here is a gentle reminder about our current rules regarding packed lunches.
No sweets
No chocolates
No fizzy or sugary drinks
We reserve the right to withdraw items from packed lunches which do not conform to these guidelines. We encourage parents to limit crisps, cakes and biscuits.
We are currently working on a whole school food policy which will tighten the rules on packed lunches in the future.
Free School Meal Eligibility
Please note that the deadline for new applications under these criteria is 31st March.
You can click here for a link to the application form.
If you have any questions, please would you contact the school welfare team at North Yorkshire on schoolwelfare@northyorks.gov.uk or by phone 01609 533405. Thank you.
Alma Bridge Crossing Patrol
You are probably all aware that the Alma footbridge (near the Water Rat pub) is due to close for two weeks for repair. This should have been from Monday 5th March but due to high water levels it has not yet started. When the bridge does close the School Crossing Patrol will move to the top of Bondgate Green near the roundabout where the children can cross instead.
Parking Safely
If you are finding it difficult to park safely, please call into the office for one of our 'park and stride' permits which enables you to park in the bottom section of Sainsbury's car park at drop off and pick up times.
Survey results
Thank you to those parents who responded to our online survey about internet use and e-safety. The survey has provided some interesting findings, especially as the survey was sent out to parents of children aged 3-11.
Here is a summary of findings:
90% of children have access to the internet. 70% have access through a tablet, 45% through a gaming device and 40% through a mobile phone.
Up to 16% of children use social networking sites such as Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram, despite the minimum age limit an all these networking sites being 13 years of age.
45% of children access the internet for an hour or more per day. A third of parents do not always have rules in place to limit time spent on the internet.
Whilst 88% of parents have discussed internet safety at home, only 57% are confident with privacy settings on all devices and less than half say all devices are filtered and monitored.
We asked what further advice and support parents would like, over half or parents requested support on the following areas.
Parental Controls
Cyberbullying
Grooming
Setting boundaries and rules at home
Thank you again for responding to our survey, we shall make plans based on the findings.
In the meantime, here is a link to the internet matters site which has excellent jargon free support for parents about parental controls on all sorts of sites and devices. https://www.internetmatters.org/parental-controls/

Message from The Cathedral
This Sunday, 11th March, please come along to celebrate Mothers’ Day at the Cathedral’s Mothering Sunday service when we celebrate both our mums and the love of God who ‘mothers’ us all. The children will give out daffodils to the adults as all worship together. All welcome. 10.30am on Sunday 11th March.
We are sure regular attenders at Breakfast Natters were disappointed that the weather last week meant we missed the first Thursday in March. Mrs Denney has kindly rearranged it so we can still have a get together this month - so please put Thursday 22nd March in your diaries. New faces are always welcome!
Thank you to everyone who donated at the Christingle Service. We raised £78.10 which has been sent to the Children's Society.
Last Saturday, the Cathedral held a sponsored Bible read, where people read extracts from the Bible all day long. We're delighted one of Cathedral School's pupils got involved and read beautifully. Well done Ella!
