Welcome Back to Copper Canyon!
School Year 2021-2022
Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year! We've missed you!
If you are new to Copper Canyon, welcome! I look forward to meeting you! If you are returning, I am so excited to welcome you back!
It's been thirteen years since I sent my first daughter to kindergarten. Now she's headed into her senior year of high school. Yikes! But, I can remember so vividly her scraggly blond hair and her cute, chubby cheeks. She didn't have a care in the world, and she was ready to take on the playground like she was a Marvel comic hero! This memory gives me a lump in my throat since she is going to be a senior, but those elementary school years are so sweet and fun! (Truth be told, one of the ladies from the office staff just walked in while I was writing this, and she caught me brushing a tear away while thinking about those precious days.) Thank goodness we have another daughter who is only a sophomore, so I have a couple more years before another big transition! Time goes so quickly, and we are so honored to be able to share this time with your family. Thank you for choosing Copper Canyon!
As I enter my 24th year in education, 6th at Copper Canyon, I am honored to serve as Principal of this excellent school and very excited for the start of the year! I absolutely love the start of every school year! Since it's been two years since we had an actual 'start' to the school year, this one feels extra special! It's going to be enjoying a sweet bite of great chocolate. Our teachers, staff members, and your PTO have already been working hard to get ready for this school year. We've got many of our traditional events returning, such as Meet The Teacher, Curriculum Night, and much more.
For those of you who are new, Copper Canyon is a very special and wonderful school! We think it's the best ... but you can give it a few days or so before you agree with us as well :-) haha This newsletter is loaded with information, so grab a nice, cool iced tea and enjoy!
Have a PAWSitively awesome rest of your summer!

Meet The Teacher - Monday, August 9
This! We are SO excited for THIS event! Thank goodness! Come on in, bring your school supplies, and meet your teacher! This event will be in two different chunks of time. Families with last names beginning with the letters A-L will come first, and those beginning with letters M-Z will follow. We would like to invite you to enter through our front lobby and head toward your grade level (we will have plenty of people in the hallways to direct you). Class lists will be posted outside of classroom doors. Edukits will have already been delivered to classrooms. Once you have found your seat and met your teacher, we would like you to exit either the north or south doors of the building. Please do not exit back out the lobby. Remember, this event is a quick one just to simply meet your teacher; parents will be invited back for an informative Curriculum Night the second week of school (see additional info below).
Last Names A-L: 8:30-9:15
Last Names M-Z: 9:30-10:15

Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) ~ Our Culture of PAWS
One of the foremost advances in schoolwide discipline is the emphasis on schoolwide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. Instead of using a piecemeal approach of individual behavioral management plans, a continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings (such as hallways, buses, playground, and restrooms). We have developed specific expectations across campus as a means to set students up for success. We will also be using reflection sheets when needed as a means to increase communication between school and home with regard to behaviors that are not within acceptable expectations.
