COVID-19 update
Troy City School District
Update on COVID-19 (coronavirus)
April 16, 2020
Dear Families,
Thank you for your unwavering support during this challenging and unprecedented time. I hope you are all staying safe and protecting yourselves and each other against the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
As announced today by Governor Andrew Cuomo, schools across New York State will now be closed until at least May 15. We are told he will reassess the situation every two weeks.
Also, as you are probably now aware, the Board of Regents announced that the June Regents Exams have been canceled. Please see additional information on this and other important notes below.
The Troy City School District has officially moved to distance learning for all students. We are all so proud of our teachers, students, and parents for their ability to step up to the plate and adapt in such short notice. While we know we cannot replace the in-classroom experience, I am so impressed with the innovation and cooperation that all of you have shown so that our students continue to be engaged and educated.
We know that the coming weeks will continue to challenge all of us. I encourage everyone to stay home as directed. Please continue to wash your hands frequently and keep your distance from anyone not in your household.
We have included important information below regarding meals, assessments, and online learning. We know that there are still many unanswered questions regarding things like grading and graduation ceremonies. We ask that you please be patient with us as we work to determine solutions that are in the best interest of our students. Please continue to visit TroyCSD.org/coronavirus for resources and the most up-to-date information from the District. You may also reach out to your building and district administrators if you have questions.
We will overcome this. We will get through this together and I am certain we will come out stronger than ever. We can. We will. End of story.
Sincerely,
John Carmello
Superintendent of Schools

NYS Assessments
The NYS Education Department has canceled all 2020 elementary- and intermediate-level State assessments for the remainder of this school year. This includes:
New York State Grades 3-8 English Language Arts Test;
New York State Grades 3-8 Mathematics Test;
New York State Grade 4 Elementary-Level Science Test;
New York State Grade 8 Intermediate-Level Science Test;
New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) in Grades K-12; and
New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA) for students with severe cognitive disabilities in Grades 3-8 and high school.
Regents Exams and other NYSED Graduation Requirements
On April 6, the Board of Regents announced that the June 2020 Regents Examinations are canceled. Students who were originally required to take one or more Regents exams in June shall be exempt from the requirements to pass such exams in order to be issued a diploma so long as they meet certain requirements. We are still awaiting guidance on the August Regents Exams.
Visit NYSED’s website for specific information on the Regents Exams, Pathway Assessments, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Locally Developed Checkpoint B Exams, Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential and +1 Pathway.
Distance/Online Learning Program
The Troy City School District has shifted to online learning for all students in Grades K - 12. Student learning remains important during this time as it provides the foundation for future grade levels, courses, and in some cases post-secondary plans.
All students will receive a combination of Virtual Educational Opportunities and Continuity of Instruction.
Virtual Educational Opportunities include a wealth of resources relevant to a grade level and/or course of study, ensuring students can be intellectually engaged and continue practicing skills already mastered.
Continuity of Instruction includes online learning opportunities designed and delivered by certified teachers that allow students to move forward with virtual instruction in course content and skills.
Please check in with your child's teachers and related service providers regularly. Now more than ever, open and consistent communication is essential as we monitor your child's progress and work together to remove any barriers to learning in this new format. We remain committed to our students and families and look forward to supporting your child's optimal social-emotional health and continued academic success.
Facilities
All District buildings are closed to the public. In addition, based on guidance from the Department of Health, all Troy CSD outdoor facilities - including playgrounds, tracks and fields - are closed in an effort to help decrease the spread of the virus.
