Lively Middle School
September 17, 2021
Greetings Falcon Nation,
It’s hard to believe that we have completed five weeks of school, and there are only four weeks left in the first nine week grading period! Now is a great time to sit with your child and ask them to show you their grades. Students can access grades by logging into the AISD portal and selecting the student self-serve tile. Click on the resources below for more information on accessing grades in the student or parent portal.
Lock Down Drill
Our goals at all times are to protect the safety of our students and staff, to keep parents informed, and to prevent any unnecessary anxiety. New district policy requires each campus to notify families in advance of lockdown drills which we are required to conduct once per semester.
Our first semester lockdown drill will be Wednesday, September 22nd.
What is a lockdown?
This procedure is to be used in the event of an incident that requires that students, staff and authorized visitors remain in classrooms or other secure areas.
What happens in a lockdown drill?
The lockdown drill will be announced over the school’s public address system. Students and adults will be required to clear halls and other open spaces and go to the closest classroom or other area that provides some cover. Students should go to the nearest classroom, even if it is not their normal classroom. Classroom doors will be closed and locked, and lights will be turned off.
It is important for students to remain calm and quiet, and to follow staff members’ instructions at all times. Classes will resume normal activity when the drill has been completed. If you have any further questions or concerns, please reach out to our school administration team.
First Edition of the 2021-22 Falcon Cry
The yearbook and newspaper classes have proudly published the first edition of the digital student newspaper for this year. Please check out the Falcon Cry and look for weekly updates.
Short Cycle Assessment
This year, Austin ISD has updated its benchmark testing to better assess student learning and progress monitoring throughout the year. Students will take Short Cycle Assessments for each tested subject area at the end of the first, second, and third 9-week grading periods. Students will be taking these assessments in their core tested subject classes the week of October 11-15.
All assessments for SCA #1 will be approximately 12 questions and are tightly aligned with the content that students have learned throughout the first grading period. Teachers will be able to use the data from the SCA to plan re-teach and extension lessons to match the needs of every student. If you have questions about SCA testing, you can reach out to your child’s teacher for more information.
Please help us keep our school staff and students safe. As a reminder,
If you are ill please stay home
If your child is ill please keep them home
If you are experiencing any symptoms please stay home
This week, Lively kicked of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month by learning about ways Latinx people self-identify and the different ethnicities that make up Hispanic/Latinx culture. We also explored murals in Latin America and in the Chicano Mural Movement in the United States. If you get a chance, ask your student which mural was their favorite and why!
Additionally, SEL in advisory is an opportunity for students to engage with one another through play and art. This week, students played art games and had lots of fun participating in drawing challenges.
The window to nominate students for AISD’s Gifted and Talented program opens on September 13th and closes on September 24th. These dates are firm due to the tight fall timeline set by AISD.
How Do I Nominate My Student? What does my student need to do to be screened?
Parents and teachers can nominate students for Gifted & Talented screening by completing the google forms below or emailing Ms. Northcutt, the Magnet Director at email@example.com. Students can also nominate themselves!

Lively Limitless Magazine
Submissions are now open for Lively’s digital literary magazine: Limitless! All students are welcome and encouraged to submit artwork, poetry, short stories, original song lyrics, photography, or any creative expression. Submit your work by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by giving it to your ELAR teacher.
The Dia De Los Muertos cover art contest is also open! Students can submit their Day of the Dead themed art pieces by emailing photos to email@example.com or drop them off in the Lively Library. The winner will receive three professionally printed copies of the magazine. See the photograph below of last year’s winning cover art!
We want to hear your thoughts, concerns, and solutions. Join us for a virtual meeting on Thursday, September 30th, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., so we can work together to support your child and maintain a safe, productive learning environment for all.
Finally, let’s showcase and recognize our amazing students! Starting with our first ever female QB, Isabella De Felice! Congratulations for bringing home a big win this week. We are so proud of you! Checkout all the photos of Lively students learning, competing, and exploring.
