Parent Night

Parent Night is on Monday!

Parent Night is an event we hold for parents that allows the teacher to discuss the curriculum for the year and classroom expectations. Here are the dates for Parent Night:

1st-3rd Grade: September 16, 5:30- 6:45 (Meet in West Gym)

4th/5th Grade: September 16, 7:00-8:15 (Meet in West Gym)

Picture Orders

This week students were sent home with their Picture Proof Order form. Orders are due Monday the 16th. Picture Retake & Makeup Day is scheduled for Wednesday October 9th. Attendance Week in Review

What a wonderful week of promoting school attendance. Our attendance rate we will be submitting is....We hope it gets us in the top ten!

Each day we also acknowledged the grade level with the best attendance. Those grade levels will then choose a theme outfit for the entire school to wear during the week of September 23.

Grade Level Winners

Monday- 1st Grade (100%)

Tuesday- 1st Grade (98.9%)

Wednesday- Kindergarten (99.1%)

Thursday- Kindergarten (99.1%)

Friday- 3rd Grade (97%)

We will let everyone know of all the themes in next week's newsletter. Also, we will keep you updated if we are invited to the recognition ceremony for the top ten schools with the best attendance rate.

We do want to make it a goal to reduce the number of students who have missed 10 or more days. Last school year, close to 25% of our students missed 10 or more days of school. This is equivalent to missing two or more weeks of instruction.

Being on time to school is also important. Last year about 10% of students were late to school more than 10 times.

We want to connect with students/families to help improve our numbers. We will continue to promote regular school attendance with our community and problem-solve with families when needed.

Please help us with promoting regular school attendance at home. Here are some helpful ways that families can do this with their children provide by John Hopkins University:

Develop a routine

When preparing for school, give you and your child enough time to get ready in the mornings and evenings. Set a bedtime routine to have your child pick out clothing and shoes to wear, as well as pack their backpack with assignments. Follow a set bedtime and wake-up time to stay on track. Don’t forget Breakfast. A study by the Food Research and Action Center found that breakfast has a direct correlation on behavior, participation and overall performance in students

Make school a priority

When you prioritize your child’s learning, they do too. Mark your child’s school schedule on the family calendar at home, placing emphasis on exciting school activities such as a field trip or recital. Be sure to plan trips and family vacations around your child’s schedule so they do not miss too much school. You might also seek out virtual or at home volunteer opportunities to show your dedication to their success.

Support your child

Anytime your student exemplifies success in the classroom, reward them! Parents can encourage a child’s academic attendance and other achievements by establishing a reward system at home. Reward systems, such as a sticker chart or fun activity of their choice, offers students incentive to attend and perform well in school. These systems are simple to set-up and teach your child about working toward and achieving attendance and other school-related goals

Stay in contact with the school

Develop a relationship with your child’s teacher early in the school year. A great opportunity to do this is during parent-teacher conferences. Be sure to exchange contact information so you can be alerted if your student struggles with participation. Remember to announce excused absences well in advance to allow to prepare for any missed curriculum and assignments.

MAP Testing

Students did a great job testing this week. We will share scores and reports when we send out report cards in November. Feel free to touch base with your child's teacher if you would like any more information on their results. We look forward to seeing everyone grow and hit their growth targets in the Spring!

MMS 24-Hour Challenge

MMS students will be participating in their annual 24-Hour Challenge on the soccer field here at MES next Friday. We will have many visitors coming and going. Please be aware of this if visiting our school next Friday.

PBIS Fundraiser

MMS and MES are teaming up for a fundraiser to help support our PBIS program at Millburn.

Art Club

Art club will be offered to students this year. We will have two groups: 2nd/3rd Grades and a 4th/5th Grade. The cost is $50 and it will run from 2:25-3:40 in the art room and supplies will be provided. There are openings for only 24 students per group, once it is filled your name will go on the waiting list and you'll have the first opportunity to join the next session. You will be notified either way. If you are in the first 24 signed up, a registration paper will be sent home to you to fill out and return with payment. Math Club

Mrs. Marasco and Mrs. Rayos would like to invite 1st & 2nd graders to join math game club. We will practice our math skills with fun activities and games. Fall Fest: Join us for our first community event - Millburn Fall Fest this Saturday, September 14th, 12pm - 4pm at the Elementary School. What a great way to kick off the school year, hang out with friends and meet other parents. We have pony rides, inflatables, food, 50/50 raffle, teacher/student activity, games and prizes! Crafting Day: Calling all Crafters! Looking for some time away to work on your special craft project? Meet new crafting people? Join us on our next crafting day Saturday, September 21st from 9am to 9pm at Millburn Middle School (east gym). Reserve your space ($25) by September 15th – see the virtual backpack for the reservation form. See vendors from Stampin’ UP, Rodan and Fields, Pampered Chef, Scentsy, and LuLaRoe. Lunch and Dinner is provided – (we do ask for you to bring a side dish to share).

Box Tops: The Back-to-School Box Top Drive is underway with a due date of Friday, 9/27. Please send in all of the box tops that you have been collecting over the summer and help Millburn raise extra money! The classroom with the most box tops submitted will win a classroom party and there will again be a random winner of a $25 Target Gift Card (every 25 box tops submitted earns 1 raffle ticket). Collection sheets will be sent home soon.
