Parent Peek at the Week

Week of April 19th, 2021

An Important Message.....

At Kawartha Heights we all know that pivoting once again to online learning is not ideal. We know that some of you are relieved, given the precarious situation we find ourselves in both locally and provincially. Others are frustrated and stressed knowing that supporting your child(ren) at home is challenging. Please know that we feel these same things too! Moving to online is a TON of work for everyone concerned, but we also have done this before and are better prepared than ever before.

Once again, students will be accessing their learning through each teacher's Google Classroom. Please make sure you log on to Edsby and Google Classroom to ensure that you have the start up information from your child(ren)'s teacher. While educators are still on Spring Break, you can expect communication from them this sometime on Sunday.

It is of critical importance that we do everything we can to support you in continuing the learning. If there is one big lesson we learned from last spring, we must keep connected to you and our students so that we don't lose any learning time. If you face challenges that are stopping you from connecting online, please reach out to your child's teacher so that we can work with you to develop strategies to support. At this point we don't know how long this shut down will last, so maximizing learning will be our priority.

Please keep looking for updates from the province and our school board - as well as weekly Parent Peek at the Week updates. And if there is anything we can do to support - please just let us know.

Stay safe, stay kind, stay hopeful,

Jennifer

If you are in need of a Chromebook, please complete this Google Form by Wednesday, April 14 at 9 p.m. Please note: The OEN (Ontario Education Number) required for the technology request form can be found on any of the student’s report cards.

If you have any issues with the Google Form, please email KPR_Technology@kprdsb.ca . Students who have SEA technology assigned to them at school, will be contacted to pick it up at the same time as the hand out for other technology. Stay tuned for more information!

Daily Online Screening

Just a little reminder to please ensure you complete the COVID screener daily with each of your children. If one of your children does not pass, everyone must stay home. Then follow the instructions on your screen. The screener can be found at: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/. If you would like a paper copy of the screener, please see the attachment below.

To All KPR Families,

Today, the provincial government announced elementary and secondary students will return to virtual learning following the April Break. Therefore, KPR elementary and secondary students will pivot to online learning only when classes resume April 19. Schools will remain closed to in-person learning.

The government also stated it will continue to monitor the status of COVID-19 to determine when students will be able return to in-person learning safely. Families will be informed once a safe return date is set for in-person learning.

Students currently in KPR’s Virtual Elementary School and Virtual High School will continue learning online, as usual, when classes resume virtually April 19. Learning and Life Skills (LLS) students (elementary and secondary) will be engaged in face-to-face learning at their home school with their teachers and support staff as of Monday, April 19.

Day care centres will remain open, but before- and after-school programs will close as long as schools are closed to in-person learning.

Should the Ministry of Education announce further details, we will share them with students, families and staff as soon as we are able. In the meantime, both elementary and secondary students should prepare for an online-only return to classes April 19.

Online learning will follow the same model used when schools in Ontario were closed to in-person learning in January. Teachers will once again use their regular communication platforms, such as Edsby, Google Classroom or D2L, in working with students.

In addition, online learning for all grades will involve a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students will spend part of each school day linked to their teacher live online, and complete the rest of their learning independently using resources posted online by teachers.

With today’s announcement of short-term school closures, we are, once again, gathering information about student technology needs to support remote learning. If your child or teen does not have a tablet, laptop or other electronic device for online learning, please let us know. If you are in need of a Chromebook, please complete this Google Form by Wednesday, April 14 at 9 p.m. Please note: The OEN (Ontario Education Number) required for the technology request form can be found on any of the student’s report cards.

As always, we offer our sincere thanks to students, families and staff for their continued efforts and support in these very challenging times.

Sincerely,

Rita Russo
Director of Education

A few important pieces of information.....

1. Please note that due to the move to online learning, we have had to postpone our Family Virtual Paint Night. We will now be painting together on Tuesday, May 11th. Stay tuned for more information on pick up of art kits - coming shortly!

2. Please note that due to the stay at home order, the Kawartha Heights play equipment and grounds are closed to family use until further notice.

One more thing....

During these challenging times, it easy to get down on ourselves. I came across this quote and wanted to share it:

Dear worried parents/caregivers,

Your child has not "fallen behind in school" this year. You are not failing as a caregiver. Your child is surviving a global pandemic and their educators will continue to meet them where they are and take them to the next step.
