Birmingham Public Schools ~ Fall 2018

Reach out to me, Jen Hilzinger, with any questions big or small

In this Issue: I LOVE winter in Michigan. It can get rather dark for days, weeks maybe even months in Michigan in the winter. Getting out and enjoying the beautiful snow and our lovely state can really make winter FUN. I've included some skiing and other types of locations - both for the day and overnight.

Also thanks to a parent sharing her experiences in the complex task of finding playdates and babysitters for your child(ren) at our last Pierce ESL parent meeting, I've included some ideas for making playdates for your children (and YOU) and ALSO some local teenage babysitters. Let me know how it goes if you try any of these ideas!

Playdates American Style

Have you reached out to arrange a playdate for your child yet with a new friend? If not, I highly recommend you do! Here are some tips to consider when you do:

1) Talk to your child and ask if there is anyone that they would like to have over to your home. I bet they will have someone in mind already.

2) Use the class list - email or phone - and reach out to the parents. Don't be shy, all parents do this at some point. I predict you will be met with a friendly voice interested in the same thing.

3) Invite the parent to stay at your home during the playdate only if they would like to -- this may help you both feel more comfortable. But don't be surprised if the other parents 'drop kids and go'. Most adults are pretty trusting with other parents from their child's class.

4) Two hours is a good time frame for a new playdate. Make sure to trade cell phone numbers in case there is a problem.

5) Enjoy these new friendships for your kids and for YOU.

Useful Resources: Local Teenage Babysitters

Local Birmingham teenagers with lots of babysitting experience. Please ask when you call them how much they charge per hour.
