School Counselor Update

March 2016- Highland High School

THANKS Highland Rotary Club!

Special thanks to the Highland Rotary Club for awarding us a grant that allowed us to update our career center. The money allowed us to purchase much needed technology to utilize with our students for financial aid, college and career planning.

ACT testing

Juniors will no longer be taking the ACT during the school day as part of state testing. Students who want to take the test on a National test date must sign up online at and pay the registration fee.

HHS is a test center for the June test. Sign up early to secure a seat. Registration is due by May 6. However, we anticipate our site filling up by mid-April.

If you can't afford the registration fee for the ACT or ACT with writing, you may be eligible for an ACT fee waiver. See your school counselor for additional information.

Senior Exit Meetings Coming Soon

Counselors will be meeting with Seniors in groups for senior exit meetings. During this meeting students will be completing a form letting us know their future plans. They will also complete a final transcript request and a SWIC transcript request if applicable.

Final transcripts will be sent out as soon as grades are finalized, posted and transcripts are processed. This is typically completed by June 15th.

AP Testing

Students who signed up and paid fees will be completing tests for Advanced Placement Courses May 2-6 and May 9-13. Final payment is due April 8th.

Be sure to contact potential college admission representatives to find out required transfer scores. You can also utilize College Board's AP credit policy Search at:

Registration Update

In late April, Counselors hope to meet with current juniors to finalize their schedules for senior year.

All other students will receive a class list this summer. Schedule changes will occur the first three days of school. Changes can only be made if a student did not request the scheduled course. Level changes require approval from teacher and parent.

SWIC Dual Credit reminders

Students enrolled in Composition, Public Speaking, Oral Communications or Statistics can earn dual credit at SWIC as long as they pass the appropriate portions of the COMPASS test or the receive the required ACT score.

Compass testing will be offered to students requesting these courses for the 2016-2017 school year in late March.

Illinois School Counselor's Association Presentation

On Friday March 11, the HHS School Counselors presented at this year's ISCA down state conference. Our presentation "There Are No More Excuses!" demonstrated how we collect and use data in creating a data-driven program. The session identified common excuses counselors make in resisting change, the changes made in a short time and what the future holds for our department. Over 45 conference attendees participated in our breakout session. We are very proud and pleased to share what we do with our professional organization.
