The Engaged Campus: Higher Education for the Public Good
Civic engagement upholds the historical promise of post-secondary institutions: a quality education for the public good. An engaged campus shares its greatest strengths with the community through service-learning, direct economic support, and applied scholarship that tackles local and global problems. Community partnerships provide opportunities for learning and compel college campuses to ensure that education does indeed serve the public interest. By aligning collaboration and resources, communities and colleges could create the collective impact necessary to effectively address community and educational needs. Yet in periods of economic hardship and amidst the intense pressures facing higher education today, sustaining an engaged campus can be especially challenging.
In 2012, the National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement released a report entitled A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future that calls on higher education to reclaim its civic mission. The task force implores decision-makers to think broadly about the purpose of higher education beyond workforce preparation and training to help students learn, understand, and develop the skills and disciplines essential for a vibrant democracy. This is a bold call to action in the face of economic recession and high unemployment.
