Why is Foster famous

In 1957, he went to Africa, where he encountered cultures so oppressive of deaf people that parents hid their deaf children or abandoned them altogether. Hearing missionaries told Foster that deaf children didn't even exist in Africa. But he found deaf children and created 31 schools for them. Before he finished, he built schools in Benin, Congo, Chad, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon.

How did Foster become Deaf?

Foster was born on June 27, 1925, in Ensley, Atlanta at the age of 11, both he and his brother contracted spinal meningitis and became Deaf. During Fosters time as a child, education for African Americans went only to the sixth grade.
