A letter from our President...
Fellow Members,
This is my first Covey message to you as President of the Executive Committee. It is an honor and privilege to serve as your President during 2015. I certainly have big shoes to fill given all the outstanding leaders who have served as President throughout Alvamar’s storied past.
To those of you who may not know, the Executive Committee’s mission is to represent you, the membership, with the ownership and management of Alvamar. In order for us to accomplish this mission, we need you to share your ideas regarding how Alvamar can continue to enhance the membership experience. With the pending sale of the club, 2015 promises to be an interesting and momentous year. It is my hope and expectation that the Executive Committee will be able to exert a positive influence on the future direction of the club with the new ownership.
Many good times were enjoyed at Alvamar during 2014. Our member golf tournaments and social events were well organized and attended. “Bounty Night” at the Alvabar continued to routinely draw large crowds and provide a great social networking platform. Several high-profile, outside golf events were successfully hosted by Alvamar. None of this would have been possible without the tireless efforts of many members who volunteered their time to help create, organize, and host these events. We are currently looking for members who are willing to serve on one of the many Membership Committees we have in place. PLEASE GET INVOLVED. I promise you it will be a rewarding experience.
Lastly, I want to recognize Greg Moore for his leadership as President during 2014. I also want to thank departing Executive Committee members Chris Davis, Gary Grob, Mike Higgins, Scott Willette, and Jeff Wyatt for their dedication and commitment to making Alvamar “The Place to Play” over the last several years.
January Golf Updates:
As I look back on 2014, I realize how fast it has gone. Many events happened this year that made an impact to the club. To start, we witnessed an amazing run by our Kansas Women’s Golf Team to Nationals, followed by Tyler moving on to Buffalo Dunes GC in Garden City, KS. Close season finishes for Kansas Cup, Kansas City Cup, and the ladies Kansas City Cup, an all without a berth in the playoffs. The ACCWGA celebrated the Silver Anniversary (25th) of the Quail Classic with great success. Plus the Royals made it all the way to the World Series. Now looking into the future of Alvamar I see exciting things on the horizon. Paul, Ryan, and I are now in year 3 and are settling in to the culture of Alvamar. Member events are scheduled with Calendars available in the Golf Shop. 2015 will be a wonderful time to be a member and I look forward to seeing everyone enjoy their Alvamar to the fullest.
Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~Hal Borland

January:
A new year is always exciting when you have an attitude that you are starting something from a fresh point of view. Alvamar is about to reinvent itself and the prospects for what the revitalized Alvamar looks like are very exciting. Of course we will move through the time that plans become projects and drawings become facilities. But, on the other end of the transition is a new Alvamar waiting for us to play and enjoy.
The other great thing about a new year is that you have the hope and goal of playing better golf. What is better golf? That question is answered by each individual. What stands in the way of you playing better golf? Again we each, as individuals, have a unique set of experience, opportunity and mental physical abilities. For one golfer better may be a score or handicap and for another it may be having more fun driving, pitching or putting the golf ball. And for many better may be not losing as many golf balls.
Having more fun is a good goal to aspire to. This coming year we will offer quite a few opportunities for you to have more fun with your golf. Watch for emails, go online and check out programming schedules or call or come by the golf shops and find out more about more fun. Play in a tournament. Check out the extended golf instruction offered. Join a league. Any of these will likely lead to more fun. Let’s move into 2015 and have some fun watching for the new Alvamar and playing better golf.
ACCWGA Updates
Happy New Year from Alvamar Country Club's Women's Golf Association!
We hope everyone’s holidays were bright and merry. Our Association is looking forward to 2015 and all the new and exciting happenings that we will see over this new year. Keep in mind that our terrific practice facilities are available to you, along with our teaching Pro, Paul Hooser, who is ready to help you keep your game in shape over the winter months.
ACCWGA wants to remind all lady Alvamar members that we have an 18-hole group and a 9-hole group that play every Tuesday from April through September. January: Tee to Green
The maintenance staff at Alvamar would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year and hope that your holiday season has been a great one. As 2015 unfolds, we look forward to providing you with two great golf courses that you can be proud to call your home. It also is a good time to reflect on what was a very good 2014, with a few speed bumps along the way.
A few of the highlights:
· The weather cooperated for the most part, as we enjoyed a fairly mild summer, with timely rainfall that allowed our turf to thrive throughout the season.
· The renovation of #16 Hidden Valley pond added a nice visual enhancement to one of the best golf holes on the entire facility.
· The bunker work continued, the most notable being the rebuilding of #11 bunkers.
· Once again, Alvamar was the host to several great golf tournaments this season. Both the Men’s and Women’s Member Guest tournaments went well. We also hosted some of the better amateurs and professional golfers around in the Kansas Amateur qualifier, the KGA FourBall tournament, and the Web.com Monday Qualifier.
· Dennis Murray-, with over 40 years of service to Alvamar in the maintenance department, decided to enter into a much deserved retirement in 2014. We look forward to Dennis returning on a parttime seasonal status in 2015.
And, of course, the most major “lowlight” in memory:
· The overnight storm that occurred on July 6th into the 7th, which coincided with the Kansas Amateur Qualifier, left a path of destruction not seen before at Alvamar.
As you can see, 2014 was a memorable season for many reasons. Thanks to all for a great year, and here is to making 2015 even better.
Food & Beverage
Food & Beverage:
I hope all our members had a wonderful holiday season. The food and beverage staff would like to extend a big “Thank You” to everyone who helped to make the Santa Brunch and New Year’s celebrations a huge success. It’s wonderful to see so many members staying active at the club during the winter months.
Sledding at Alvamar is a wonderful activity for families to partake in as the snow blankets your course. The food and beverage staff is happy to provide hot chocolate in the Alvabar to keep your families warm. The staff understands that it is tempting as parents to drop your kids off to enjoy the winter weather while you tend to errands or other activities. Sledding is a fun activity however; there are certain safety risks involved so the staff does ask that parents remain with their children to provide that much needed adult supervision on the hill. Please help us keep everyone safe at your club.
See you at the club,
Jen Nuessen
