April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
A key component to the healthy development of children is the conscious allowance for social and emotional exploration and learning. To grow in a well-rounded and responsible way, we benefit from learning how to recognize and manage difficult events and emotions by accessing coping and problem-solving skills. Even more importantly, we need to understand when it is vital to reach out for support and support one another.
For this reason, certain topics deserve special attention. The goal of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is to increase awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. This goal is accomplished in various ways through education about healthy relationships, consent, and bystander intervention.
Through Schaumburg High School Wellness classes, students will learn about:
Characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships.
The concept and laws surrounding consent.
Erin’s law, which is a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program that teaches age-appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and how to tell a trusted adult.
The effects of societal messaging.
In addition, educational announcements and information will be shared with students throughout the month. To learn more about these events, please access the link below:

SHS Parent Academy
The Parent Academy is a program designed for our parents/guardians that will establish a sense of community within our school. The mission statement of the Parent Academy is as follows:
"The Parent Academy is an opportunity to connect with parents through shared learning experiences, skill building exercises, and informational presentations. It will empower parents to participate fully in their child's education by meeting the needs of diverse learners through a culturally responsive lens. Parent Academy will be a two-way conduit for understanding our parents' needs and supporting their participation in their child's life."
The final Parent Academy session of the 2021-2022 school year was held on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022. The topic was "Career Exploration and Planning." To view the presentation, click the link below:
