Nilsen's Counselor Update
Class of 2022! August 6, 2020
~Dr. Seuss
Welcome Class of 2022!
We want to officially welcome you to the 2020-21 school year. This summer you might have spent some glorious time at the beach or binge-watched Netflix. In other words, you hopefully relaxed and caught up on some sleep. Which is completely understandable. High School summers are actually quite important times. They are a great time to volunteer or work. Junior year of high school often doesn’t get the respect it deserves. However in the hierarchy of importance, junior year deserves a high ranking because of its pivotal nature.
Classes and Grades. The junior year selection of classes—and the grades you receive in them—is very important because it is the last full year of grades that admissions folks will review while deciding your fate. Enroll in some International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. Get to know your new facilitators. They may also play an important role for you in your senior year because you will need them to write you a letter of recommendation for college. We can also help you concurrently enroll in college classes at College of the Canyons (COC).
Thinking about College. Although you are not graduating this year, you are one year away from graduation. What school do you want to attend? What career path do you want to pursue? Visit colleges, prepare and take the SATs and ACTs and speak with current high school seniors to figure out what you should do your senior year.
Career Research. Consider possible career paths. Conduct research, take some career assessment tests in your advisory classes, talk with your family and other adult family friends, meet with your Facilitators, Advisors and guidance counselors, and evaluate your likes and dislikes. You may also want to look into some type of additional education or training you may need after high school, especially if your career field requires certifications. If you’re thinking of a military career, now is the time to meet with military recruiters to learn more about your options.
Be organized! Expect to get A LOT of mail from colleges. Designate a drawer, file or email account to keep track of all of your college papers. Create a timeline and meet your goals. Deadlines are a crucial aspect of junior year.
Friendships and Activities. Join one of our activities or groups this year, play an instrument, take photography, become an Ambassador, join the Get Lit Team or Theater, participate in a sport. Make lasting memories with your friends because time will fly by before you know it. Plan a trip to the beach, the movies, the mall or just hang out at someone's house. You should spend as much time as you can together. Join a sport, a club or an elective together.
It starts right now!
Here is a simple schedule of information to jump start junior year. Expect more information throughout August to keep you informed about next steps leading up to the first day of classes.

Success takes a plan!
Every learner at SCVi has a scheduled counseling appointment during the first month of school. In eleventh grade you should take the PSAT (October), and SAT (Spring) and begin Financial Planning for College. But, it's never too early to start planning with our Academic, College and IB Counselor, Kris Nilsen. To set up an appointment and begin planning for your success, click here. Or simply reach out to Kris anytime by email to: kris.nilsen@scvi-k12.org.
If you would like to speak to our registrar, Colleen Shanahan, you can contact her via email: registrar@scvi-k12.org.
Keep a lookout for continuing summer emails with additional important information as we lead up to the first day of classes on August 25th
Discovering where you belong is not what you see in movies. Don’t be afraid of the unknown, and don’t let your friends influence your decisions. Sometimes the unknown will surprise you for the better. Group Projects. Presentations. Rubrics. Reflections. Everything together is going to make you stronger. We know it seems like the cliché thing to say, but we promise you that when it seems impossible to keep going, you can do it. Every roadblock is simply a speed bump.
With Enthusiasm,
Your Upper School Team
