5th Grade News
Early October News
October Curriculum
Math - Students have working on building an understanding of the patterns within the number system. We have used that knowledge to multiply and divide any number by 10, 100, and 1000. This week we will focus on order of operations and discuss various multiplication strategies.
Social Studies/Writing - Civics/Government Test on Wednesday, October 5th. Students are working on (or have finished a study guide). We will be going through the study guides together on Monday and I will clarify any questions students may have at that time (and on Tuesday). No surprises. If it's on the guide it could be on the test. There is a Quizlet for study practice at this link: https://quizlet.com/class/3431807/.
Science - We will begin the states of matter (transitions from solid. liquid, and gas) and transition into the water cycle in the month of October.
- We will also be creating an energy cycle in the classroom. Parent volunteers with painting experience are needed. Email Ms. Briggs if you are interested.
- We will continue to have vocabulary quizzes on Fridays. homework- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HyGcjwP3HuxRXE_5ym3yz20TwGvz6F1td72Bv1TT2f0/edit?usp=sharing
- Our unit test on states of matter and the water cycle will be on Thursday October 27th.
Reading - Our focus of learning and instruction over the next couple of weeks will be:

- I can summarize portions of text when reading or listening to information being presented (SL.5.2)
- I can determine the meaning of content words or phrases in an informational text (RI.4)
- I can determine the main idea(s) of an informational text based on key details. (RI.5.2)
- I can explain important connections between people, events, or ideas in an informational text accurately. (RI.5.3)
*I will be sending home a parent/teacher conference sign up sheet on Monday, October 2nd. Please choose three time slots that work best for you. Students are more than welcome to attend the conference, but it is not required. As soon as you send your selections back, I will schedule you, circle the time slot on your paper and send it back home. My intent is to send the paper back the day you send it in.
*Scholastic book orders will be coming home Monday, October 2nd and will be DUE Friday, October 14th. I currently do not have my account set up to order on-line, but as soon as I do I will let you know.

Cardboard Challenge
We have begun a new STEAM related challenge at Claxton in only the 5th grade. Students are planning, designing, building and completing arcade games made only out of cardboard. They will be presented at the Claxton Fall Carnival.
Students will have one a day a week to complete their project with their group during science. They will also have times throughout the week that they may go to the Maker Space in the Library to complete their game when they complete classwork in all classes.
here is a link that explains the global movement we are participating in.

Additional Info
After School Arts: ASA is now in full swing for fall classes.
Eating lunch with your child: Please feel welcomed to eat lunch with your child or bringing in treats for his/her birthday. We eat from 12:20 - 12:50 give or take 5 minutes for the different classes. The tricky part with bringing a birthday treat is that we eat all together and we will not always eat with our homeroom friends. Please anticipate 22 students if you bring a treat.
Snack: Since we are departmentalized, students will be responsible for bringing in their own snack for themselves each day, if they so desire. As a 5th grade team, we have decided there will no longer be a "whole class" snack. Again, this is to help prepare students for 6th grade where they will no longer be given snack.
Contacting Us: Please email us all at clx5thgrade@acsgmail.net with any concerns
Parent teacher conferences: Your child's homeroom teacher will send home information about beginning of the year parent teacher conference. For the beginning of the year you will meet with your student's homeroom teacher. The homeroom teacher will go over iReady data along with other information.
Fun Friday/Missing Work - Students may earn 20 additional recess minutes on Friday if homework for ALL classes is complete. If any assignment is missing or incomplete, your daughter/son will be working on that assignment instead of participating in extra recess. This incentive is based solely on completion of homework.
Homework for 5th grade
Math homework- Math homework will most usually consist of solving various word problems. Students should expect 1-3 problems over the course of a week. We use these problems as a jumping off point for lessons; whereas students discuss how they made sense of the problem and strategies used for solving them. A larger focused is placed making sense of the problem and showing your work. Students should expect at least one of the homework problems to be collected and graded each week.
Social Studies/Writing - We do all work in our class. Your daughter/son would have work outside of class if 1) She/he was not focusing on the task(s) 2) Wanted to put more detail into the work or needed additional time 3) She/he needed to do a little research for a long term project. In general, students will not have homework in the traditional sense.
Science homework- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HyGcjwP3HuxRXE_5ym3yz20TwGvz6F1td72Bv1TT2f0/edit?usp=sharing
Reading Homework - As soon as the i-Ready data is analyzed, each student will be taking home a "choice board" of assignments, with the expectation that one should be completed each night M-R. The packet as a whole will be due each Friday.
