Tarbell was born on November 5, 1857 on a farm near Hatch Hollow, Pennsyvania. Both parents came from New England stock.Tarbell began her first formal education in high school there. In 1880 with a bachelor's degree in biology and soon discovered that as a woman, she could not hope to pursue a career in science.
