Sandpoint High School
May 2023
Message from the Principal-
Dear Bulldog Students, Families, and Friends,
Just like that, and here we are in May! As the sun begins to shine brighter and longer, spring activities continue to ramp up to full swing, and students become eager for the summer days ahead, I encourage you to help students keep focused in these next important weeks.
Two of our senior students, Maren Davidson and Parker Pettit, recently honored math teachers, Doug Fry and Troy Minogue, at the annual NISTAR (North Idaho Student Awards Recognition) for their impact on learning. Next week marks Teacher Appreciation Week, and we are thankful for our parent support group, CARE, who will lead the celebration. While SHS educators are so appreciative of these kind acts, it is also a reminder that SHS students have a remarkable team to support them and help them reach their full potential. Counselors have been working with students one-on-one to arrange schedules for next year. Junior class students are completing state ISAT assessments in ELA, math, and science. Students are taking AP courses and exams. Senior students will be participating in Scholarship Night, Mock DUI, prom, and graduation. Spring is a busy time at SHS as we balance wrapping up a year of learning and preparing for the next steps ahead.
Thank you for your partnership to support student attendance and achievement. Please always feel free to reach out to me, the SHS administrative team, counselors, and teachers if you have questions or input.
Sincerely,
Principal Jacki Crossingham
SHS AcaDeca Team on the Podium at Nationals
From left to right Carys Perilloux, Ellie "Kodo" Klippel, Rachel Fedak, Laurelyn Eastley, Kody Bocksch, Keane Haesle, Priscilla Hester, Kyla LaFountain, and teacher Ms Dana Stockman.
On April 27-29, the Sandpoint High School Academic Decathlon team competed at the
USAD National Finals, which were held in-person for the first time since 2019. The event
took place in Frisco, Texas. They completed the essay and three of the seven objective tests
online earlier in the month, then completed the speeches, interviews, the other four
objective tests, and the Super Quiz while in Texas.
Five students won medals in the individual events. Senior Kyla LaFountain, a four-year
decathlete, won a silver medal in essay. Junior Priscilla Hester won a silver medal in speech.
Sophomore Laurelyn Eastley won a silver medal in literature. Sophomore Carys Perilloux
won three silver medals in essay, music, and interview. The most decorated member of the
team was junior and co-captain Keane Haesle, who won a bronze medal in social science
and silver medals in speech, science, economics, and math. He was the overall bronze
medalist in the Honors Division, was the highest scoring member of the team, and was
voted Most Valuable Team Member by his teammates. Also competing were sophomore
Ellie “Kodo” Klippel, junior Rachel Fedak, and junior Kody Bocksch, who was chosen by his
teammates to be the flag bearer for the state of Idaho at the Super Quiz and the Awards
Ceremony.
According to former SHS AcaDeca coach and former IAD State Director Mary Bird, this is
not only the best that Sandpoint High School has done at the National Finals, but it is also
the highest any school from Idaho has placed at this prestigious national competition.
Twenty-seven states sent 54 teams to compete, which is about 485 students, the best and
brightest from each state. Current coach Dana Stockman said, “This is a dream come true
for us. We are on cloud nine! We set a goal way last summer during our summer study
sessions to be on the podium when Nationals rolled around, and we did it. I’m retiring at
the end of this year, and I couldn’t have asked for a better finish or a better group of kids to
work and travel with. It’s been amazing. Plus we got a beautiful trophy and a really big
banner. That’s pretty cool!”
The Academic Decathlon competition consists of 10 individual events in art, economics,
essay, interview, literature, math, music, science, social science, and speech. Additionally,
teams compete in a relay – the Super Quiz – spanning all topics covered in the individual
events. Every year the theme is different. This year the theme was The American Revolution
and the New Nation. Next year’s theme is Technology and Humanity. Award categories
include students in Honors (3.8 – 4.0 GPA), Scholastic (3.20 – 3.799 GPA), and Varsity (0.0 –
3.199 GPA) representing small, medium, and large schools.
Four Compete at BPA Nationals in Anaheim, California
Four students (Rachel Aylward, Hannah Bennett, Owen Miller, and Austin VanCorbach) just returned from the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference. There were 6,500 members in attendance competing in areas involving Finance, Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Digital Communication & Design, Management, Marketing & Communication, and Health Administration. Our students came away with industry certifications in Microsoft Access, Microsoft Word, Computer Networking and Computer Network Security. They performed well in their events being in the top 20 in four of the six events. The experience of competition at this level will be something the students will have with them for years to come. This impactful, educational, travel opportunity would not have been possible without the financial support of Sandpoint Rotary Club Career Tech Scholarships, Graphic Impact Scholarships, and travel voucher donations from the 2022 SHS BPA National Team.

Staff of the Month-Dana Stockman
Dana Stockman
Ms. Stockman is;
- Incredibly patient with students who do not deserve such patience. Additionally, she has for the fifth year running directed a state winning Academic Decathlon team, a program which places much additional stress upon her shoulders for which she is rarely recognized.
- French and AcaDeca wouldn’t be the same without Ms. Stockman; it is always fun :)
- Great teacher and coach! Works so hard to make sure AcaDeca gets what they need to succeed!
- She is a fantastic AcaDeca coach.
- Awesomeness
- Ms. Stockman has put forth so much effort both in class and out to bring us to our fifth state championship for AcaDeca in a row.
- Ms. Stockman is very dedicated to her students and encourages each and every decathlete to work their hardest and accomplish their goals.
- She is a phenomenal teacher and deserves this nomination since she will be retiring soon.
- Parce qu'elle est une bonne personne, et elle adore son travail. Elle est une prof excellente.
- Ms. Stockman is hands down the best teacher I have ever had. Her French class is the first class that I have struggled through, and I have learned SO much. I am going to miss her so much next year!
- Because AcaDeca loves her.

Interact Club and the Carousel
Students from the Sandpoint High School Interact Club assisted the organization "The Carousel of Smiles" with organizing their volunteer hours. Volunteer painters have contributed over 500 hours per horse on the painting alone. The Carousel of Smiles is working to bring an antique carousel to downtown Sandpoint on the banks of Sand Creek. If you would like to be part of other great volunteer activities including the Rotary Gala, the Healing Garden, or are interested in Rotary Youth Exchange, please attend an Interact meeting in E2 on Tuesdays 3-3:30.

Sandpoint High School Choirs Receive Awards
The SHS Chamber Choir traveled to Seattle to participate in the Seattle Heritage Music Festival. They performed superbly and came home with the “Gold Award.” You can only receive this award if you earn a 90 point adjudication from the judges on a 100 – point scale. They received a 93. Along with this Gold Award is an invitation to perform next year at Carnegie Hall in New York.
After coming home from Seattle this vocal ensemble performed at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho. The Chamber Choir won their division (AAA) and the Women’s Performing Choir won their division. Director, Jon Brownell, stated that, “We incorporated into our performance what the judges in Seattle told us we should do. We took it to the next level.”
These vocal music students would like to thank the community for their continued support as they roam around the city singing at the different restaurants. Thank you, Sandpoint. We hope we made you proud!"

Tech Tip
Spring Clean the Junk!
As we approach the end of the school year, students should start thinking about the data that they have on their Chromebook and for seniors (or those leaving the district) in Google Drive as well. If students have anything saved on their Chromebook, please know that these devices get cleaned both physically and virtually, so anything you want to keep after the school year ends should be stored either on Google Drive or in another location. Please note that we are going to start removing student-owned "Shared Drives", meaning anything in these will be irreversibly deleted. Shared Drives are distinctly different from your regular Google Drive. Seniors, you will have a limited time to get any data you want to keep before your account is locked out and eventually deleted. In general, assume that your accounts will be inaccessible starting Labor Day, 2023. Be sure to change any accounts connected to it to a different email address so you can keep your access.
Speaking of Chromebooks, students who have checked out a Chromebook should return them when they are no longer needed. They are disabled over the summer months, so would serve no purpose except as an expensive paperweight. They would also have issues when coming back onto the school network at the beginning of the school year. It is better to get them in and taken care of so they are ready at the start of next year. Check with your teachers to figure out when you can return your Chromebooks, the sooner the better. No one wants to sit in line on the last day of school to turn things in.
Thank you,
