Some Big News in the Pine Class!

Next Week - No school on Monday for report writing (enjoy the long weekend!).

Pennies, nickels, dimes, & quarters - If you can, please send spare change with your Pine to help us out with our Farm Stand math unit starting on Monday. (At the end of the unit the class with decide on a cause to donate the money to).

Chaperones Needed - Next thursday, October 14th, we're taking a trip to Prospect Park as part of our integrated unit study of Brooklyn. We'd love some family members to join us. Drop us an email if you're interested!

Math Games - This week your Pine created a "kit" of math game materials to take home. They are excited to share the games we've played in school with you at home! Please let us know if you have any questions and we hope you'll enjoy playing together.

This week we introduced the idea of using the dramatic play area to build "small worlds". Students used open ended materials and worked together to build amazing mini lands full of rich story telling. There was a candy world with bubble gum pipes and a snake world complete with a snake specific playground.

Reading some silly poems and some serious ones, we started to think about the way poets write poems in very different ways. We read poems that told stories and also poems that had a clear rhythm.

This week our observational drawings led us to begin writing poetry about things in the classroom.

Extra Clothes Reminder

Please send your child with a ziplock bag of extra clothes. We don't anticipate very many bathroom emergencies in 2nd grade, but we want to be prepared for art projects carrying over onto clothes, water fountain explosions, or the unfortunate sick stomach. Thanks!

This week we listened to a lot of wonderful music. It's exciting to see the Pine Class get into the zone, working with their classmates or on their own, while listening to music.

One consistent composer of the week was Erik Satie.
