Not to be a wet blanket, but…
One of the modest trends we’ve seen recently at ACMA, particularly in our 6th and 7th graders, is fleece blankets. Like Linus from the Peanuts comic strip, a few of our young ACMA students regularly pack blankets from class to class. Most often it’s no big deal; with a boiler from the middle of the last century, we recognize that classrooms can be chilly on one side of the building and warm on the other. Sometimes, however, carelessness and rain can conspire to create soggy, smelly fleece tripping hazards. With this in mind, I’d ask parents to encourage their students to bundle up with a coat or jacket, sweater or sweatshirt, and leave the fleece on the couch at home. We’re not banning blankets or anything like that, but hoping that we can work together to keep our school quirky, artistic, and a little less like Linus.
Senior Capstones Coming in March
SENIOR CAPSTONE
Senior Capstone is the 30-minute speech given by every Senior. This oral presentation will include students’ reflections of their art journey. They will speak to their research paper, mentor, successes, etc. They may or may not have an artistic presentation (dance, visual art etc.), but they will speak to it. These Capstones will occur on March 7 & 14.
SENIOR CELEBRATION
Oregon Battle of the Books - March 5th
Team members will be battling to go onto regionals.
The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.
OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.
ACMA has 4 teams in the middle school and one in the high school. Each team reads 16 books. The battles will be March 5th and the winning team goes onto regionals on March 10th at Century High in Hillsboro.

Student Survey Opens Feb 5th - June 15th
High school students will be surveyed this year by accessing a link in their Career Information System (CIS) account. The survey will be available in English and Spanish. The survey window is February 5-June 15.
Student Survey
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups.. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Margaret in the Main Office.

Construction Update….
Over the next few months you’ll see construction updates in our Hello from ACMA, and while we won’t see any hammers swinging for another year and a half, it’s never too early to have perspective about what is on our horizon. So…
This year and next we will remain at our current location. In the summer of 2019 we’ll move to Timberland Middle School, a yet to be opened building eleven minutes north of our current site. We will be at Timberland for two school years, and will return to a new building in the fall of 2021.
You will now be able to access a Construction page on our school website (under School Highlights) that will contain more detailed information, timelines, photos, and more. We want to be sure to keep our school community in the know every step of the way.
Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free
Turn Your Key – Be Idle Free
Idling vehicles contribute to air pollution and emit air toxins, which are pollutants known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects. Monitoring at schools has shown elevated levels of benzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other air toxics during the afternoon hour coinciding with parents picking up their children.
Children’s lungs are still developing, and when they are exposed to elevated levels of these pollutants, children have an increased risk of developing asthma, respiratory problems and other adverse health effects. Limiting a vehicle’s idling time can dramatically reduce these pollutants and children’s exposure to them.
In the Beaverton School District, the School Board recognizes that a safe and health school environment is important in contributing to the health of students and adults. Clean air is essential to creating a healthy learning environment for students to participate in the educational process.
Unnecessary vehicle idling emits pollutants, wastes fuel and wastes financial resources. Therefore, a goal of the Board is to eliminate unnecessary idling by all District vehicles, and to establish a way to minimize the practice in all vehicles on District property (Board Policy EBAD).
As parents, you can do your part to reduce students’ exposure to air toxins emitted in the exhaust of idling vehicles by:
· Turning off your engine when waiting for students to be picked up
· Turning off your engine when you arrive to school and when you expect to be parked for more than 5 minutes
· If idling is necessary for temperature control, please restrict it to no more than five (5) minutes
We encourage you to eliminate unnecessary idling, not only at our schools but anywhere you are waiting for more than 30 seconds. This simple change will improve the air our children breathe, as well as the air quality in our neighborhoods.

School Board Passes Resolution to Authorize Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a five-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.
If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools.
