How are Teachers in Florence 1 Integrating the COVID-19 Crisis Into Their Lessons?
Jessica Gaddy, ELA Teacher at Southside Middle School
I am integrating the crisis by having the students work on an I Survived the Coronavirus Pandemic. Each ‘chapter’ is a topic about how they feel about what is going on. Students are given the opportunity to share how they feel about certain changes due to the crisis such as: school closure, eLearning, not seeing their teachers and friends, not having the spring break that maybe they had planned for and not returning to school for the remainder of the year.

I also counted down from 20 (seconds) to illustrate how long it should take to wash your hands properly and I posted a video of proper handwashing techniques.

My Theatre 2 and Theatre AMP (Arts Magnet Program) students engaged our health pandemic in several ways.
After researching COVID-19 for accurate facts, theatre students wrote monologues from the viewpoint of a character involved in coping with the virus and wrote dialogues with two characters experiencing a conflict regarding the virus. Students also kept a writing journal for four days, sharing their routines, feelings, and thoughts about the pandemic.
Using the log entries as material, students wrote a script for video log, which I called a "vlog" even though it was applied loosely. Students and I posted our "vlogs" to connect with each other and to communicate how we were each coping with COVID-19. The "vlog" was called, "A Day in My Life with Coronavirus." Students appreciated connecting to each other and posted response videos to communicate with three different students how they related to the "vlog" and also offered advice or encouragement. I shared my "vlog" with my faculty, and I also enjoyed connecting when some of my colleagues responded.
