Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
Weekly Update
September 2, 2016
In phonics, we practiced reading and writing words with the short vowel a sound as in apple. We also practiced reading and writing action words that end in s. Students learned that s at the end of a word can make the /s/ sound or the /z/ sound.
In reading, students listened to stories (Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon and the Rainbow Fish) sharing a central theme, we are all unique. Students also listened to the story Wemberly Worried. After reading, we discussed what worried Wemberly. We also talked about first grade worries and ways students can work through those worries. Students also learned that "Reading is Thinking". We talked about the importance of paying attention to the words and pictures to help better understand the story. Students practiced using "thinking codes" to share their favorite part, show when they were reminded of something in their own life or share a question they had about the story.
In math, we began unit one Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System. Our focus this week was developing strategies for counting accurately. Students practiced this skill by playing Collect 20 Together, Staircases and Mystery Boxes.
We began Unit 1 in Social Studies, Geography Basics. In this unit, Students will be introduced to basic geography skills including map elements, land forms, man-made features and relative locations.
