art room news
Wells Elementary
September 14-18
A busy week ahead!
Just a few reminders.
Your child can bring a large shirt to cover his/her clothes while in art. They will leave it in their locker and bring it on their art day. Otherwise, I always say, dress for mess. Check the schedule for your child's art day and the lesson for the week.
If you have some time and would like to lend a hand, I could use a volunteer during my plan time either Fridays or Mondays to help with prep. Getting materials ready takes up a large part of my time and I find I could use an extra pair of hands. If anyone would like to also help hang art, let me know. Thanks!
If you have any art supplies you would like to donate, please send them in. I could always use yarn, craft supplies like beads, heavy cardboard and lots of newspapers.

Kindergarten
First Grade
Groups B-E will start a lesson on organic and geometric shapes. We will look at the art of Henri Matisse, particularily his paper collages.
Here is a video of Matisse cutting paper and constructing a collage.
Second Grade
Groups B-E will finish their weaving and bring them home. I will probably keep a few for display.
Everyone should be really good at tying knots!
Third Grade
Groups B-E will finish their building and add details with colored pencils, graphite pencil and crayons.
Here is more information about the many historic buildings in Plano.
Fourth Grade
Groups B-E will begin a lesson on the color wheel and color mixing. We will look at the art of Andy Warhol, focusing on his endangered animal prints. The students will draw an animal and decide which color family they will use to paint it.
Fifth Grade
Groups B-E will finish their sketch and transfer the drawing to the canvas board. After a short demonstration on using acrylic paints, everyone will start painting.

Poster and Art Contests
Here are a few tips to make sure your child is successful when creating posters or projects for art contests.
1. Make sure your child does all the work. You can certainly advise, but never draw on your child's work.
2. Follow contest guidelines carefully. Most have very specific rules.
3. Make sure to turn in the artwork or poster by the deadline.
4. For posters: Keep the concept simple. Large lettering and simple graphics make the most effective posters. Make sure the message is positive and fits to the theme.
Art contests like Reflections have their own set of rules. These will be coming shortly.
