Hour of Code Grant Winner
Survey for Research Study Being Conducted
You are invited to participate in a research study examining the perceptions of teen on teen violence as portrayed in young adult contemporary realistic fiction and the impact on the classroom or public library use of such fiction. This study will be conducted by Dr. Kjersti VanSlyke-Briggs, Sarah Karas, and Jenna Turner from SUNY Oneonta. The purpose of this study is to better understand the perceptions of educators and librarians on the impact that young adult contemporary realistic fiction, centered on school shootings, has on the operations and interactions with teens in both classrooms and libraries. We invite you to participate in an anonymous online survey along with others that will anonymously respond.
This survey will collect some basic demographics and then ask you a series of prompts about your perceptions of young adult literature in contemporary classrooms and libraries. You will be provided a series of descriptors and asked to sort those by: strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree. This survey should take approximately ten minutes to complete. Your anonymous survey responses will be kept confidential. All data will be stored on a password protected computer and in a locked file drawer in the principal investigator’s locked office. Participation in this study is voluntary and you may decline to participate, may refuse to answer all questions on both the focus group and survey, and may withdraw at any time without penalty. This study will help us better understand the impact of young adult literature in the classroom and in libraries as a reflection of contemporary events. If you have any questions about your participation in this study please contact Sarah Karas by email at Sarah.Karas@oneonta.edu.
Please complete this survey by February 14, 2019. Please forward this survey to other teachers and/or librarians that may be interested in participating.
You can access this survey at the following link:

2019 Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity
I am writing to let you know of a new ALA award that was approved during the 2019 Midwinter meeting in Seattle. Because the award will be given during the Annual meeting this summer in Washington D.C., I am asking for your help in getting the word out to your libraries so we can receive nominations by the March 16th deadline.
The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity recognizes U.S. libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with readers. The award comes with a $10,000 cash prize for the library. In addition, four runner-up awards consisting of $1,000 in Penguin Random House books will be awarded. The winner will also receive airfare, hotel, food and related expenses to the conference from the Penguin Random House Foundation.
The award is open to school, public and academic libraries. A MLS degreed librarian is preferred, but not required. The nomination should show evidence of hardship (economic or natural disaster) and successful partnerships to overcome the hardship. A strong focus is on innovative and unique programming that incorporate new technology, reading methods, or materials and successful outcomes.
The nomination form can be found on the ALA website at:
http://www.ala.org/awardsgrants/penguin-random-house-library-award-innovation-through-adversity
I am thanking you in advance for helping us get the word out.
Fondly,
Andrea Lapsley

SLS Conference Scholarship Application
We wanted to take a moment to remind you about the SLS Conference Application. The School Library System recognizes that professional development is an integral part to growing as a school librarian. It also recognizes that the cost of a conference/workshop can sometimes be a barrier to attending. As a result, the School Library System is willing to assist school librarians with registration costs for one conference/workshop per year up to the amount of $275. Applicants must cover all lodging, transportation costs, transfers, and conference meals that are not provided with conference registration. If your scholarship application is approved, you agree to attend all days of the conference in full and turnkey what you learned at the conference to other educators. You also agree to submit proof of your attendance at the conference so that we can reimburse you for the registration fee.

High School to College Transition Interest Group - February 28th
The High School to College Transition Interest Group provides a forum for high school, academic and other librarians to come together to discuss how to prepare high school students for college level research, what high school students should expect when they get to college, and how to make this transition easier for students.
Facilitated by Kerrie Burch at the Questar III School Library System and Carol Anne Germain at the University at Albany, this group meets for the first time on Thursday, February 28 from 3:30-4:30 at CDLC.
This group is an outcome of two recent symposiums on this topic. The first symposium in June 2018 included panel presentations from high school and academic librarians. Symposium 2.0, held in November 2018, was expanded to include what public libraries can offer to school librarians and students. These symposiums included presentations from librarians representing Albany Academy for Girls, Chatham Central School District, East Greenbush Community Library, Maria College, The Sage Colleges, Saratoga Springs City School District, Schenectady County Community College and the University at Albany.
To establish an ongoing dialogue and explore collaborative opportunities, this group was formed. The group will meet four times per year and schedule additional programs and workshops throughout the year. Visit the interest group page and complete a form for suggested meeting topics.
