Kendrick was born in Compton, California. His parents moved from Chicago to avoid the gangs and violence, although his father was apart of the Gangsters Disciples gang. Kendrick still grew up around Dangerous street activity because of the increase of west cost gang presence. but instead of joining the gangs and drug trade he took what he saw and made stories from his perspective Lamar continued writing music and lyrics, and collaborate with more popular recording artists, such as Young Jeezy, The Game, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne. Dr. Dre, one of hip-hop's most respected and influential producers, took the young artist under his wing, becoming his mentor in both music and business. Lamar's highly anticipated major album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, was released to wide acclaim. Singles like Swimming Pools and Poetic Justice, spread his popularity not only among hard-core hip-hop fans, but also to fans of alternative rock.
