Special Ed Updates
ESY Reminders: (procedural guidance)
- the exception, not the rule
- the purpose is maintaining skills
- specialized transportation may be necessary
- individualized to meet student needs
- may look different than school year services
Graduation changes - the State Board of Education adopted an amendment to the Iowa special education rules and Iowa now requires 4-3-3-3 for ALL students earning a high school diploma. This goes into effect May 30, 2018, so it impacts next year's freshman class. Additional tools will be coming from the DE.
District Assignments - we continue to strive for consistency in our assignments as much as possible. If we had to make a change in your district/building, your sector coordinator should be reaching out this spring if they haven't already. Staff have already started to talk about how to make these transitions as smooth as possible including spring visits to new districts/buildings.
Agency Meetings - next year in response to our staff feedback, we will hold our agency-wide meetings on Fridays. There may be some occasional work team or specialty team meetings that happen on other days, but those should not happen frequently. In addition, we have designated one Friday per month to provide our staff with guaranteed time for internal collaboration. This will allow our staff to work with their colleagues to improve their services to students and schools.
