February is Gifted and Talented Month in Kentucky
The PROCLAMATION CEREMONY for Gifted Education Month (February 2019) was held on Wednesday, February 6. I took 24 students to witness it. Read what Audrey had to say about what she learned.
Gifted Education Proclamation Ceremony
by Audrey Gilbert
On Wednesday, February 6, 2019, some of the fourth, seventh, and eighth grade formally identified gifted and talented students went to the capitol to see the signing of the proclamation that February is Gifted month in Kentucky. At the signing many members of the Kentucky legislature spoke about how much they appreciate gifted and talented students and their current efforts on improving gifted and talented programs in Kentucky schools. Many gifted and talented professionals and students also spoke.
Dr. Julia Roberts, the director of the Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University, spoke about the needs of gifted and talented students and the lack of funding for gifted programs. Dr. Roberts mentioned that funding for the gifted and talented program for every school in Kentucky is only $6 million and has not increased since 1990. She also talked about many accomplished gifted and talented students.
After Dr. Roberts spoke, many different politicians spoke, specifically, House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins and Education Committee Chair Max Wise. Adkins mentioned the Craft Academy at Morehead State University, and he spoke about two high school seniors whose project was chosen by NASA to travel on SpaceX to the International Space Station for experimentation. Wise talked about how important gifted and talented students are to the future of Kentucky. He Encouraged us to never stop challenging ourselves and to take every opportunity we are offered. Because of support from legislators, gifted and talented students across the state have better opportunities.
Many former KAGE Distinguished Students spoke about how the gifted and talented programs have helped them. Katherine Goble, the 2010 recipient, spoke about the challenges associated with being and gifted student and how the funding for gifted programs needs to be increased. The 2018 recipient, Todd Prater, talked about achieving his dream and how the gifted and talented program helped him.
This event was very meaningful to all of our gifted students. It gave us validation that we are valued and that we can do anything we try to do.

A word about Global Village/Native Attire on Day 1: Students must either wear business casual OR dress in native attire for Global Village. We don't want to make this a huge thing. At yesterday's meeting, we looked at traditional Haitian and French clothing. Everyone is responsible for providing their own costume if they decide to wear one. IT IS OPTIONAL!
We decided the following:
France-berets (I'm ordering these), black pants/skirt and white shirt, or a black dress; short red scarf or red tie (optional). I found this super cute black dress on Old Navy! Not a requirement at all, just a suggestion!
Haiti- We want girls to wear dresses or tops/skirts with a similar look to the "karabela" dress pictured above. Old Navy had a few that were similar: short and long. Again, just a suggestion! Boys will be in khaki pants and loose fitting white short sleeve shirts.
