Mrs. Nagy's 1st Grade Class
First grade ROCKS... Come be a star!⭐️
Looks like March is coming in like a LION! Here's looking forward to it going out like a lamb. A few reminders...
- HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS - Monday is the birthday of the beloved Theodore Seuss Geisel, Dr. Seuss. We will spend the day doing some fun learning activities about some of the favorite books he wrote. Everyone has their personal favorite. I will ask that each child bring in a Dr. Seuss book from home or borrow one from our classroom to do a very brief report on Monday night. We will then spend some of the day on Tuesday sharing the books that the children chose and each child will spin the wheel of Wow on the smartboard to answer a question about their book. The kids love this!
- IOWA Testing - WE WILL BEGIN IOWA TESTING TOMORROW, MONDAY 3/2. During testing this week minimal homework will be given. It is encouraged for all students to get LOTS of rest every night this week and a good "brain" energizing breakfast. The children enjoy taking these, because they feel like the big kids! An important component is listening and following directions! Many times the question or directions MAY NOT repeated. Please remind your children of this, for this can really hurt their performance on the test.
- Spelling List - No spelling list this week due to IOWA testing. We will resume spelling next week.
- Snack chart will be coming home tomorrow. How quickly February went by....the schedule for this week includes Robert (3/2), Maya (3/3), Jacob (3/4), Emma (3/5), and Ali (3/6). Thank you:).
- Rice Bowls- Last week Rice bowls should have come home in your child's folder along with some books about Lent. This is a very important time in our faith and in our classroom. Please be supportive to your children as we journey through these 40 days and encourage them to embrace this time as a time to pray, fast and give as a family..
- Chinese New Year - Chinese New Year was February 19th. We talked about the differences and similarities in the celebration compared to ours. It is important for the students to be exposed to many cultures and global celebrations. We decorated the fú symbol which means good fortune. Chinese people hang this sign above their door hoping for good fortune to fall upon them. We also received lucky red envelopes and had some oranges which are thought to bring good fortune one's way, too!
- Dental health month - February is Dental Health Month. Due to the large amount of time the students missed due to inclement weather, we will continue to learn about teeth into the month of March. The students will receive a tooth-chart to track their brushing and flossing habits at home this week. I ask that the students be encouraged to complete this chart each day and return it to school when completed.
- Romeo and Lou - Romeo and Lou will have visited all the homes of the students in our class by the middle of this week. We will vote to see if the children would like a second turn. If it is a majority, we will send Romeo and Lou home a second time with your child sometime during the month of March. If your child does not want to participate a second time, no worries! Although most of them LOVE this!
- Book It - March is the last month for Book it! The March requirement will be coming home in your child's folder. This children will have the entire month to complete, March 31st. If you need another copy, please let me know.
- Magnificent Marshmallow Manners-We will continue with marshmallow manners in March. We have earned around 40 so far!!! When we reach 100, the students will earn a hot chocolate and movie time! Encourage your children to earn those marshmallows!!
- Read to the class - Starting this month, I will have a sign up sheet for students to read a book to the class during storytime. I will encourage the children to pick a book that they can read fluently and that they have practiced at least once or twice at home. I also encourage their book choice not take more than 10 minutes. Many of the children look forward to doing this, BUT forget to take the time to practice their book choice. It is such a treat to see children grow in their confidence reading when they get to be "the teacher". I encourage you to help your child practice the book and their teacher voice when it is their turn. A list will come home to keep you informed of when your child may have signed up.
- Flashlight Fridays -What a fun time we had on Friday with our flashlights!!! The children had such a fun time with their books and flashlights. A little something to break up our long dark winter months. Please feel free to send them in if you haven't done so. I think we will continue this for a few more Fridays. See pictures below!
Here's looking forward to spring sometime soon!!!!!!

MATH
We are working with fact families and missing addends. We will continue to compare numbers with greater than/less than and write our own word problems and clues to learn not only the number but how numbers present themselves in complex real world situations where reading and number sense go hand in hand.
We will also continue to work on graphing, addition and subtraction with number families and missing addends. The adding and subtracting will begin to be through 20. Please continue to work on flash cards at home! I can tell those children that do their 5 minutes of math practice every night. The children need to be able to recognize and complete simple math facts by the end of First Grade. Fluency is very important for success in 2nd grade.
Phonics
Compound words and contractions continue to be a focus, too!
