Message to families
Dear IHCS Families,
It has been a true honor to serve the Mariner students, teachers, staff, and community, for the past seven years. It has been my pleasure to work alongside the very best students, teachers and community.
After much consideration, I feel it is the right time to focus on a goal. So with a heavy heart and mixed emotions, I am informing you I will be leaving as principal of Innovative Horizons Charter School effective December 6, 2022. I have accepted an opportunity to transition to a new position in the district as Coordinator of Student Services.
I am thrilled about the positive changes we have made including the enhancement of academic achievement, the focus on AVID, and the very positive changes in overall school culture. While I am proud of these changes, I am most proud of the amazing staff that has come to call IHCS home. The IHCS staff is filled with hardworking remarkable individuals who deeply care about our students. This is a building full of leaders and learners who are philosophically aligned to doing whatever it takes in making education meaningful. I am so proud of the work that has been done and I am super excited about the team that will be here to continue to do the work.
I will miss my job and the incredible people I have had the pleasure of working with throughout the years. I can not thank you enough for all of the opportunities and experiences during my time at IHCS. I will do everything I can to ensure a smooth transition after I move on.
Once again, thank you for this great opportunity to serve the people of this community. I do hope that I can continue to serve you in my new role should the opportunity arise.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sharill Cortez
Thank you to the amazing parents who organized A “Grinch” type of breakfast for the IHCS teachers and staff.
Fitness Feature
As we encounter the holiday season, we get a lot of time off. This is a great time for families to play together. They can go to the park. They can go for walks. As I surveyed the students about their plans for their breaks, many of them said they are looking forward to going to the park and playing with their families. Play is so important for children, but as we become adults we often forget how important it is for adults too. Some of the benefits of play for both adults and children include:
Relieve stress.
Improve brain function.
Stimulate the mind and boost creativity.
Improve relationships and your connection to others.
Keep you feeling young and energetic.
Play helps develop and improve social skills.
Play teaches cooperation with others.
Play can heal emotional wounds.

So as you make your plans for the upcoming break, creating time to play with your families is highly recommended! There are so many good reasons to play!

Coming Soon: Campus Supervisor
We are happy to announce we are moving forward with hiring a campus supervisor. A few of the responsibilities will include patroling and monitoring the campus and adjacent areas, including: lunch areas, hallways, walkways, classrooms, playgrounds, restrooms and parking lots, etc.; maintain order and safety of campus; defusing potentially volatile situations; know and identify harassment and bullying issues and intervene to assist in resolving. To easily identify the campus supervisor, they will wear a prescribed uniform. The goal of adding the campus supervisor will help to increase the safety on our campus for our students.
