Sketchnotes 101: Disclaimer
Sketchnoting is an alternative to traditional note taking. We are not advocating for throwing out the lined paper and pencil, but for looking at note taking as more of a process, that encourages reflection and synthesis. Sketchnoting is not for everyone, and it is not a requirement that you be an "artist" to be a sketchnoter. We are hoping that after you visit our site, you'll give this medium a chance, and bring back the doodle.
How to Get Started
Before you start sketching, choose the method that works for you/your students. Whether you are using a pen and paper, or an iPad Pro, it is all about finding what works best for you!
If you're going high-tech, find your device/operating system below, and download one of the free apps listed!

How to Sketchnote like the Pros
Sylvia Duckworth said that the most effective way to sketchnote (for her) is to take notes during the presentation/lesson, then highlight her 10-12 takeaways. After she does this, she immediately sketches out the information. You can try this out, or you can sketch as you watch.
Try it!
Kevin Thorne said that you can be a pro if you can sketch these five shapes. Test his theory on your own. Sketch the following things by only using the five shapes below:
- Coffee Mug
- Tree
- iPad
- Donut
- Arrow
Student Examples
See these student examples of sketchnoting, and jot down what you notice. What are the similarities and differences between these pictures? What types of students sketched them? What subjects are being depicted? How can this be applicable to your practice?
