Hello STEM Families!

Welcome to this week's edition of the STEM Weekly Stream. This week's newsletter is being sent from Day One of the 2022 College Excursion. In addition to updates from the road, information regarding Report Cards and Conferences is below. Finally, please read for important upcoming events, including Wednesday evening's Meeting with Dr. Parkinson regarding 2023-24 building movements.

Day One

We made an on-time departure from STEM Academy this morning at 7:00 AM heading south for this year's College Tour. The first stop was Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia.

The trip continues tomorrow at Virginia State University. And by week's end students will have toured seven campuses, visited several museums, and gained invaluable experience as they solidify their post-graduation plans.

Upcoming Stops

In addition to Virginia State, students will tour North Carolina Central University, Shaw University, George Washington University and Morgan State University, plus the Smithsonian Museums and landmarks along the way. Tune in next week for pictures and details from the trip!

7:00 Meeting

Please be sure to attend Wednesday's meeting with Dr. Parkinson to discuss the upcoming building shifts for the 2023-24 school year.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00 PM in the STEM Auditorium.

Please re-read the letter from Dr. Parkinson below:

From Dr. Parkinson

Tuesday, November 8, 2022

Dear STEM and Chester Upland School of the Arts Families --

I am writing this message to inform you of very important changes for the 2023-24 school year.

Beginning in June 2023, the Chester Upland School of the Arts building will undergo extensive renovations, closing the school for approximately 12-14 months.

During this time, CUSA students and staff will be temporarily moved to STEM Showalter.

STEM Showalter students and staff will temporarily move to Chester High School.

Why is the CUSA building being renovated?

We believe our children deserve state-of-the-art and modern learning facilities similar to school districts in the surrounding area. We are excited to share that the district has received a little more than $2 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding to address much-needed repairs to the CUSA building. However, the funding MUST be used by a specific date. Extensive renovations need to be completed, and the school building will be closed for the entire duration of the project. The STEM building is the most accommodating space for CUSA staff and student body.

Why is STEM moving to CHS?

While elementary school students from CUSA are being housed at STEM during the renovation phase, the most accommodating space for STEM staff and student body is CHS. Currently, CHS has approximately 900 students. The building can accommodate 3000+ students.

I understand this news may raise concern.

I will hold two meetings next Wednesday, November 16, to discuss this plan more in-depth with CUSA and STEM families. Please view the meeting details below. I look forward to seeing you in person and answering any questions you may have.
